Marty Stuart - The Making of Ghost Train

Biography

I came to Nashville from the land of Jimmie Rodgers, looking for a place, a place to belong inside the world of country music.

It was around 2:30 on the Thursday morning of Labor Day weekend 1972 when I first set foot in the city some refer to as the “Athens of the South.” I had ridden a Greyhound bus 430 miles from Philadelphia, Mississippi for what was supposed to be a ... Read more in Amazon's Marty Stuart Store

Product Description

Compadres: An Anthology Of Duets, an album that is part of Marty Stuart's worldwide celebration of the past, present, and future of Country Music. Know as Country Music's most historically minded new traditionalist and a true renaissance man, Marty has scored six top-ten hits, one platinum and five gold albums, won four Grammyr Awards, and received a Golden Globe nomination. Stuart's over three-decade voyage includes countless miles logged as a member of Johnny Cash's band and a monstrous solo career in the nineties, which spawned such chart topping hits as Hillbilly Rock and Burn Me Down. Along the way, Stuart recorded with many country legends and proved that you can perform contemporary country for a broad audience without forgetting or neglecting country roots. The singer/songwriter/musician/producer is still on fire creatively today, having released three albums last year and garnering yet another Grammyr nomination for his Live At The Ryman. Marty's latest release, Compadres: An Anthology Of Duets, is an album that is part of Marty Stuart's worldwide celebration of the past, present, and future of Country Music.

Marty Stuart began collaborating with legends when he joined Lester Flatt's Nashville Grass as a 13-year-old mandolinist. One of his biggest singles, 1991's "The Whiskey Ain't Workin'," teamed him with Travis Tritt. This compilation includes a rare Stuart mandolin workout on Bill Monroe's "Rawhide" recorded onstage with Flatt in 1974, and "Hearts Like Ours" with wife Connie Smith. He and ex-father-in-law Johnny Cash created a fiery revival of Cash's Sun recording of "Doin' My Time." With Steve Earle, Stuart created a beautifully understated rendition of Buddy Holly's "Crying, Waiting, Hoping." He was equally adept with Earl Scruggs on "John Henry" and with Merle Haggard on a 2003 "Farmer's Blues." That empathy extended to blues and gospel greats, apparent on "The Weight" with the Staple Singers and "Confessin' the Blues" with B.B. King. Two unreleased tracks include Stuart and Loretta Lynn reviving "Will You Visit Me on Sunday," a tune she'd previously recorded with the late Conway Twitty, and the Who's "I Can See for Miles" with Stuart, his band, and Old Crow Medicine Show. Unlike the many Nashville "vocal events" that are simply contrived marketing ploys, Stuart's collaborations are consistently organic, without a shred of artifice. --Rich Kienzle

Another great record from Marty Stuart. I used to think Marty was blessed to know and to perform with so many of the great artists of country music. Now I think they are blessed to be able to perform with Marty. He truly is a one of the greats of country music. Now I am blessed to hear Marty with Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, Travis Tritt, Connie Smith, George Jones, BB King, Del McCoury, Loretta Lynn, Lester Flatt and his Fabulous Superlatives. Love the pictures and the notes included also.

Any one who loves music will find something on this CD to enjoy. There's a reason it is #1 on the Americana chart this week !! It shows the whole "Marty Party" spectrum from fantastic instrumentals to blues, to ballads, to love songs, to classic country; and does it with a superb lineup of "compadres".

I had never purchased any Marty Stuart music and I was really impressed with the CD. I am mostly Bluegrass, hardly ever listen to country. The songs are so well done and it's a real taste of every type of music. I am really glad I bought this.

The songs on this album are almost all on other albums that I already own. If you have a good collection of Marty Stuart's music, you can probably pass on this. The songs are all excellent and certainly show that Marty Stuart clearly enjoys music in many different styles and is quite versatile in performing with a wide variety of musicians.

I bought this for my guitarist husband for his birthday. Even though we are not huge country fans, we LOVE the cd! The instrumental work is suberb, the variety is pleasing, and the artists he duets with are impressive and well suited to his musical tastes.

From the very talented and Major Country Music Artist Marty Stuart, comes his New Addition in "Compadres: An Anthology of Duets"! This is a wonderful CD with many Special Guest's who join Marty for what I believe to be one of his BEST Musical Ventures to date. You will not find a bad song on the entire disc, with a spectacular variety and assortment of different types of music. A must buy for the Marty Stuart or Country Music Fan!!
