Track 5 Alone is worth the price of admission!, September 14, 2008
This review is from: Compadres (Audio CD)
Until last month I was unfamiliar with Compadres - the multi-ethnic duo of Canadian/Celtic guitarist/composer/singer James Keelaghan and Canadian/Puerto Rican guitarist/composer/singer Oscar Lopez. Before the Philadelphia Folk Festival, where they appeared multiple times throughout the day, I head some "buzz" about them. When I heard them play the song "Coast to Coast", which is Track 5 on this 1997 CD, I was hooked! I can't tell you how many times I've pressed "repeat track" on my CD player for this song. The rest of the album is nearly as good. There are instrumentals (can anyone out there exceed Lopez's magnificent - and fiery - playing?) and vocals which Keelaghan's smooth voice to add a "country" tinge.
The musicians refer to their musical style as "Celtino" (Celtic/Latino) and even chose that for the name of their record label.
As I said above, the six-minute instrumental "Coast to Coast" is reason enough to buy this album. But you'll get all the other goodies as a bonus.

Unique, highly enjoyable mix, July 5, 2007
This review is from: Compadres (Audio CD)
It's unfair to review this CD poorly because tracks weren't available to listen to on Amazon. If you like Oscar Lopez's music individually, you'll enjoy this duo as well. Lopez's talent is obvious, but this CD will show another side to his work, a bit more playful. We own the CD and were also fortunate enough to see the "Compadres" in concert at the Spencer Theatre near Ruidoso, NM on June 16. You wouldn't think that celtic and latino music would go together, but these 2 performers pull it off admirably! They have coined this mix as "Celtino".
Their different styles and talents compliment each other and resulted in a very entertaining show. We were awed by Oscar's guitar skill and were laughing out loud at the way they interacted between and during many of the songs. It's unfortunate they tour mostly in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, etc., and not in the U.S., other than this one soldout show at the Spencer.
The CD is both relaxing and fun to listen to. The celtic styled songs sung by James Keelaghan are lightly flavored with the latino guitar of Oscar Lopez, and James' guitar adds another dimension to Oscar's Latino songs. I don't think you'll go wrong by adding this CD to your collection. As we were told at the show, they'll be coming out with a new CD by the fall of 2007. I'll be watching for it!
The 12 songs on this CD are:
1. Bump Me Up (to First Class) - about the "joys" of flying coach
2. Lamentos
3. Mi Vida
4. Why don't you just grow up - about getting along (while on tour)
5. Coast to Coast
6. The Kiss (Saskatoon)
7. Follow me up there, Carlos
8. Chiquilina
9. Spanish is the loving tongue
10. La Espanola
11. Red River Rising
12. Brave Soul

I rated with one star this item because How can I judge this CD if I did not hear this CD yet?. You should allow to play some tracks of the CD. I like very much Oscar Lopez, in fact I have all his CDs except this one
