Editorial Reviews

Review

"This is an excellent resource for courses in analytic philosophy as well as for readers who want an overview of twentieth-century Anglo-American philosophy. Few books introduce readers to the entire field, and none do so as thoroughly and effectively as this one."
Daniel Bonevac, University of Texas at Austin

As the twentieth century has come to an end, a book that does the service of summarizing the views of major philosophers in the analytic tradition is greatly needed. This book gives a comprehensive coverage of all major analytic philosophers and reflects a joint effort by distinguished philosophers in the field. It will thus stand out as the standard text on analytic philosophy.
JeeLoo Liu, State University of New York at Geneseo

"This attractive volume is a superb resource for anyone interested in analytic philosophy and is a worthy addition to the excellent "Blackwell Companions to Philosophy" series."
D. Haugen, Choice, January 2002

"The essays are of a uniformly high quality, some even gems of exposition, and of a uniform style, sticking to discussion of issues and views at a common level of detail..."
Journal of the History of Philosophy 2003

"This attractive volume is a superb resource for anyone interested in analytic philosophy."

This review is from: A Companion to Analytic Philosophy (Blackwell Companions to Philosophy) (Paperback)
In my opinion, the magisterial Blackwell Companion Series is somewhat uneven. When one thinks about the vast nature of the project, such a situation would necessarily ensue. Fortunately, the mostly good and somewhat bad trivialize the downright ugly. That being said, if you're seriously studying philosophy in the contemporary world, this volume should be on your shelf. Along with The Cambridge Dictionary of Philosophy (the best in hard copy), and the SEP website - you've got it all. The BCTAP is simply the most comprehensive diachronic overview of contemporary philosophy out there. While I loathe Martinich's book on Writing Philosophy Papers, this effort could hardly be better, and is useful enough to merit the description: "historic", esp. for those who HAVE to know ASAP !!!!! - for class, that is.
