If you have ordered/purchased the Platinum edition of Family Tree Maker 2001, you don't need to order this book as this manual is included with the software!

With that said, the manual is well written and easy to understand. The basics of the software operation are very well explained.

Unfortunately, the manual does not address more challenging issues related to software usage, data conversion, data management, and sourcing methodologies.

The Companion Guide, 295 pages, is on the Installation Disk as a PDF and a 5 x 7 Hard copy is in the Platimnum and deluxe Editions. This book,7 x 9 1/2, much easier to read. Family Tree Maker was been completely redesigned by Ancestry in 2008 with a few important features missing. Version 2011, 3 years later, has all of the previous power and many unique features not found in the older versions 2006 and before FTM is unique and in several ways more powerful compared to other genealogical data base products. FTM is designed to utilize the full wide screen, faster processors and high defintion computers. FTM will work on Windows Xp, Vista and 7 and on narrower screens.

Keep this manual on your desk for reference when using the new FTM. This will reduce your learning curve to use the new format, increase your use of all the enhanced features.

P.S. I started with DOS V. 1, 1980!

I am "miffed" at my self for not paying closer attention to the purchase of this product. I was placing an order for a copy of Family Tree Maker for Mac on the Amazon site. At the bottom of the first page there are normally recommendations for you to add to your original purchase. This time the book The Companion Guide Family Tree Maker 2011 was on that list. I was in a hurry and just hit the purchase for the software and the book. When the book arrived I then recognized the book was written for a PC and NOT the MAC. My first mistake in not know what I was ordering----however I trusted Amazon to be offering me compatible items in their recommendation. As I write the book was written for a PC and not a MAC thus when I started reading there is no way it is going to be totally helpful. Then I noted something else. This is almost word for word the same manually your get with the software, EXCEP the software book is written for a MAC. I feel I just wasted my money on this purchase. There is also the same information available on the CD that comes with your software. Bottom line---save your money as this book is a total waste if you are a MAC user. By the way the chapters in the book with the software is about 98% identical to the working and sections in the Companion guide. I will keep the book and not return it as the mistake is totally mine and not Amazon. I have made reference to the chapters which are identical to the book with the software. Several items such as directions/instructions just won't match the MAC terminology thus I am sending my copy to the book shelf.NOW---if you are a PC user you will not doubt find the book most helpful---however I would check first to see if that same book is not already a part of the software that you are ordering or have.I gave this book "three stars" becasue it is a duplicate of what is in the software box, otherwise it is "five stars".

This book is poorly organized, confusing, leaves out essential information. It says "you can do this!!!!!" and then neglects to say HOW. There are icons in the Family Treemaker software that are unidentifiable in the software, and this book neglects to say what they mean as well. Just a terrible "companion" and not a "guide" at all.

This is a bit of a waste of money until you get to the final publication of your family tree. Although things are well organized, and there are some conveniences, there is a major flaw in its ability to update your tree on ancestry.com. You can build your tree on ancestry, and then download it to Family Tree Maker (FTM). That works cleanly. BUT if you continue to research on ancestry, you cannot directly update our FTM tree. You have to update the ancestry tree, then delete your FTM tree and re-download from ancestry. That is a do-able solution, but a major pain and really annoying. Frankly, the only thing that is really special in FTM is the ability to print the tree in a number of different configurations... not really worth the $$$.

Purchased at a good price, delivery as promised. Hard copy reference of material included on Family Tree Maker 2011 software disk, but much easier to access. Recommended to cousin; also working on genealogy.

I purchased Family Tree Maker for Mac, and the "other people bought this" recommended the Guide to Family Tree Maker, so I bought it. But when it came I saw it was not for the Mac. Your automatic "recommendations were wrong.
