I've seen better books on the market. This book has several mistakes and explanations are generic.....not enough detail. In some parts the writer just rambles and the points are unclear. Also lots of redundancy...the same explanation of the same topic three or four times...I usually understand the topic after the first explanation. The first year companion was worse plus...

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Guide of them all., July 15, 2001

A brilliant guide and very under-rated. The best quality at the lowest price, back up your studies from other sources but the core is here. The actual quality of the paper in book itself says it all, a pleasure to read and easy to follow with a masterful CD. Cisco Press can be really proud of this one.

Also lots of redundancy...the same explanation of the same topic three or four times...I usually understand the topic after the first explanation. The first year companion was worse plus the book binding came unglued. Though most of the information is useful, you'll need other books to broaden the information base. I expected more from Cisco.

4.0 out of 5 stars The "Second-Year" title is misleading, July 1, 2006
By

After having finished CCNA 1 & 2 (My first Semester of Cisco actually taken during my third year) and now taking CCNA 3 (Second Semester as a senior)I bought this book based on its title and Cisco's name.

It is a great book for CCNA 2. But my second year is Advance routers, Switches followed by CCNA 4 WAN. This book does not cover anything for CCNA 3 or CCNA 4. So why is it called second Semester.

If CCNA 1 was first semester, and CCNA 2 was second semester then it would make sence. Except when you look for the Third-Year Companion Guide...it does not exists. To me it implied CCNA 3 and CCNA 4 and it has nothing to do with either of these.

Just be aware that it is a good book for CCNA 2, however it has no coverage for CCNA 3 or 4.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Cisco book for Cisco Networking Academy course, January 24, 2002
By

This book is a great compliment when taking the 2nd half of the Cisco Networking Academy classes (semester 3 and 4). I mainly rely on this book rather than going online to follow the course. The CD-ROM is an extra bonus with examples about the topics and provides practice to learn certain IOS commands.

This book provides essential information needed to succeed in the CCNA or Cisco Networking Academy program. It provides hints and information for the Washington School Project and a good review section for the CCNA.

4.0 out of 5 stars A lot better............, June 25, 2001
By

Well, if you are one of the poor souls half way through the CCNA course then you will be pleased to know that Cisco have greatly improved this 3/4 semester book compared to the 1/2 sem. book which was simply awful. This book's contents are is in the exact order of the online course, no jumping around... good questions, good CD with videos, flash cards and lab excercises. Know this book well and you could probably miss the class stuff altogether.
