5.0 out of 5 stars A Good Book, March 6, 2009
This review is from: A Companion to Petronius (Paperback)
I've read and re-read this work with pleasure as well as profit, and of how many books can that be said? Professor Courtney tells you most everything which can be known about Petronius. He starts with introductory topics like the identity of Petronius and his relationship with Greek romance novels, then goes on to summarize and discuss the entire text of Petronius from start to finish, including even very fragmentary sections like the story of Circe. Because of its fragmentary state, Petronius' Satyricon will always be a mysterious work, but Professor Courtney's excellent book succeeds in making it a little less so.
