must read IF YOU ARE SERIOUS ABOUT PATHOLOGY,
By John Smith "John" (Alaska) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Pocket Companion to Robbins and Cotran Pathologic Basis of Disease (Robbins Pathology) (Paperback)
This is an exceptional book ! It contains almost ALL facts you need to know in a readible and digestable concise format. I really love this book , since I read several editions of Robbins big book (90th editions), I found the new big Robbins too heavy and overloaded with lots extraneous information (GOOD FOR PROFS- NOT STUDENTS!). The pocket companion is your friend- you will not hate pathology after you finish it, yet develop the taste to know more.Couple of remarks: if you are a very beginner- use the Robbins atlas when you read the pocket Robbins, as there are no either gross of micro photos in a small book. Also, I highly recommend Robbins CD companion with case-stidues, especially for pathology residents.

Awesome resource to accompany the textbook - it really sums up each chapter - great for nurse practitioner students.

this was one of my resources for path when i was taking path in my second year and when i was studying for the step 1. I found out that it was my best source for the step 1. For my step 1 i used this book and used the pics in the big robins. i also used goljan audio, which was my second and final resource for path for step 1. IF u use all three in combination in that fashion you should be ok for step 1.I ended up making 229/95 on my boards. However for your path course, it totally depends on your curriculum and teachers if this book could be helpful.Generally, it is best to read the teacher's notes in combination with small robins(if you dont have enough time) or big robins(if you have time to read).

THE BEST pathology review,

I bought this book along with a thousand other path books (Big Robbins, Goljan, BRS) first year because I heard good things about all of them. While I used Goljan during Pathology (gold standard/must have...audio is also very helpful), I just started using this book for boards review....IT IS AWESOME! I wish I used it earlier. It has all the high yield stuff you need to know but also explains it well (helps paint that "pathology picture" that my professor always talks about...vs just memorizing high yield facts).I never really used "big" Robbins (to much detail) but I seriously love this pocket companion. Fits in white coat pocket so I plan on having it with me next year too (at least during IM). If I could go back I would have only purchased this book (along with Goljan) and not Big Robbins or the Robbins Qbank/Book (I have looked at this book and think it is too much detail for boards although a lot of other people still swear by it). Hope this was helpful.

Amazing review book,
This review is from: Pocket Companion to Robbins and Cotran Pathologic Basis of Disease (Robbins Pathology) (Paperback)
Sometimes review books are kind of hard to find. Not hard to find physically but hard to find that complements a text book so well. This pocket guide sums it all up in a small, compact, easy to carry size. It hits all of the major points and gives the most critical info. It matches up with the big book and together with the question book and atlas make for a great pathology experience.

Better to get Goljan for Step 1 focus.,

This review is from: Pocket Companion to Robbins and Cotran Pathologic Basis of Disease (Robbins Pathology) (Paperback)
I owned this book only for a few days before returning it. Goljan's Rapid Review: Pathology is a much better investment to make alongside Big Robbins for a Step 1 focus throughout your second year. This makes sense because this book is not made specifically with Step 1 in mind. It includes a lot of low-yield information useful more for pathologist-in-training than for second-year medical students working to pass Step 1. There are fewer integrations and fewer explanations of why certain diseases and syndromes present with the symptoms they do (Goljan is the king of integration and disease mechanisms). There are no pictures (but some figures), no questions, and the book is written in prose, making it harder to read through than the bullet-point style of the RR series. The book, though, is well written, and the authors have done an incredible job deciding what material to leave in. I felt like this book covered more than 80% of the important stuff in Robbins, so it's really a five-star book if that is what you want. However, if you already own Big Robbins, and are trying to study for Step 1, it makes no sense to get this watered-down version of information you already possess. Instead, get RR Path to refocus everything in a Step 1 context.

BRS Path & Internet are all you need,

For a basic MS2/MS3 path course, there really wasn't much of a point in buying this book (and especially not in buying its big brother). Save yourself the headache and get BRS path, which while ancient is still more useful and a quicker read. If you need pictures, google images is your friend.

This is an ok book. The reason I gave it 3 stars is because I do not think it is the best book to read while learning Pathology (Basic Sciences). I recommend that you purchase a more substantial Pathology book, though you could carry it around to read while you wait for public transit or any other time you have some waiting to do.

Great Companion to the Hardcover,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Pocket Companion to Robbins and Cotran Pathologic Basis of Disease (Robbins Pathology) (Paperback)
This is only 7th edition compared to the Hardcover's 8th. But it still has 99% of the relevant information in a much more condensed format. This is highly recommended if you need to review the material quickly, and if you're looking at this review saving time is really what you're hoping to do.A few of the chapters have changed order (i.e. white and red blood cell chapters have swapped), but the data is there. This is light on pictures and charts, so the hardcover edition is still useful. It also cuts out a lot of the fluff, so if you learn better by reading less dense material this may not be for you. If you just want the important stuff in big Robbins and only want to spend 1/4 of the time reading it, this is the book for you. |
