...which is one of the Top 10 Original Albums of All Time, by my estimate - it should be legally required that everyone at least try that one.

This album, a big step down, where did it all go wrong? A narrow instrumentation choice - it's almost all keyboard - and a lack of mood-setting lyrics and a conspicuous absence of Mr. White's vocals, all of which make that second album so special.

Really, the only track to measure up here is "The Darkest Horse", thanks to Meghan Wolf's vocals, a much welcome carry-over from first two albums. Unfortuneately, those keyboards sound tinny. And I also liked "Five Hands On", and maybe "Whitesky Lights" (Got Milk?).

I can't remember waiting for an albums with as much anticipation as this one. "Private Spotlight" should have been a smash hit, runaway break-through smasj hit. And since it wasn't, I guess we're condemned to forever find Mr. White suffering poor comparisons to the artist who defined the genre best, himself.

Now, one miss does not a write-off make. Fact is, the precision playing is still there, and there are hints of the huge reservoir of talent Mr. White brings with him. So, yes, I will buy that next album, come what may. And, no, you don't HAVE to but this album.

Will the real Mr. White please step forward?
