2.0 out of 5 stars Not very deep, October 10, 2006

I found the guide disappointing. It reads like an expanded manual rather than a strategy guide. It doesn't hesitate to tell you the history of the various units and weapons, but it is lacking in actual strategy-- the very reason why I purchased the "Official Strategy Guide".

Specifically, I was hoping for detailed explanation regarding: the optimal way to use units in battle; suggested order of building structures; unit grouping strategies, and the like.

I just spent 30 minutes reading the unit summary, multiplayer summary and the campaign walk-through for the Red Ball Express. The tips will help you get through the campaigns, but are not enough to make me a better RTS multiplayer gamer.

One other source of disappointment is that the guide doesn't mention anything about buildings at all.

1.0 out of 5 stars Useless and highly inaccurate, October 1, 2006
By
This review is from: Company of Heroes Official Strategy Guide (Paperback)
The descriptions of units are worthless, virtually the same as in the manual. Very obvious points are made about unit abilities, mostly a rehash of info in the manual. Several facts are simply wrong. There is a ton of historical info on the real-world counterparts of all the game units.

That's nice, but it would be much better to have some meaningful detail on how they work IN GAME.

The walkthrough is OK if you suck at the campaign. It takes up way too much space.

Multiplayer is where this game is at, and it gets a very thin few pages. No useful advice is given on unit counters or strategies or matchups. Each multiplayer map is described only in the most general of terms, with virtually no useful info, just a few generic remarks. "This map is a Sniper's heaven." OK, why? Should I spam Snipers and win? Why not?

DO NOT buy this book if you play RTS games a lot. Don't buy it if your focus is on multiplayer. There are better resources online, far better.

You may consider buying this book if you are only a very casual RTS gamer who doesn't care about multiplayer and has $20 to blow.

1.0 out of 5 stars Leave it on the shelf!, October 22, 2006
By
This review is from: Company of Heroes Official Strategy Guide (Paperback)
Bought this because the game manual was useless. There is so much NOT covered in either the manual or this guide that you are going to have to work the fan sites to find out how to work the finer points of the game.

Leave this guide on the shelf.
