5.0 out of 5 stars Wow!
Ms Lindley's book was entertaining and an easy read, but, more importantly, it was concrete and useful. 3.0 out of 5 stars Not a whole lot of helpful information
I absolutely love Mark Rashid and have read many of his books. I was hoping this one written by his assistant would share more practical solutions in the stories. But for the most part it is just an interested read about her time with him. When she talks about any clinic examples she does not give any details about what Mark did in the particular situation. So, if you...

Ms Lindley's book was entertaining and an easy read, but, more importantly, it was concrete and useful. I finished it this morning and went out this afternoon and practiced some the concepts she describes: focus, breathing, and confidence. I saw the effect on my riding and my horse's movement. Most exciting was going to the pasture, visualizing my horse coming to me to be haltered; and she did! I worked on my breathing and visualizing easy transitions and my mare was soft and collected. My trainer said I looked the most relaxed and balanced she's ever seen me. She tells a good story in the same tradition of Mark Rashid and also connected some of the dots for me from what he writes about. I'm looking forward to her next book! She and Mark can't write them fast enough for me!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very useful & extremely modest, December 3, 2006
This review is from: In the Company of Horses: A Year on the Road With Horseman Mark Rashid (Paperback)
If you haven't worked with Kathleen Lindley this modestly written book may not tip you off to her notable skills as a clinician. However, it may well prompt you to seek her out! A quick and compelling read that clearly encapsulates core concepts of Mark Rashid's unique work. As a coach of Mary Wanless's rider techniques I find this approach unbeatable for horse trainers and owners. Not just a strategy for working with horses...a guide to compassionate living!

5.0 out of 5 stars Horses as Teachers, February 20, 2007

This review is from: In the Company of Horses: A Year on the Road With Horseman Mark Rashid (Paperback)
I have read all Mark Rashid's books, and like his philosophy of horses. IN THE COMPANY OF HORSES implements Mark's philosophy as Kathleen Lindley writes about the year she spent as Mark's assistant. She gleans a great deal about how she should live; basically she learned a lot about how to live from her dealings with horses, and with Mark. Mark's calm, patient handling of adverse conditions, and the horses' understanding of keeping things simple impressed Ms. Lindley and she passes that on to her readers. Even if I did not live around and love horses, this book would speak to me on how to live my life. The book is not long in size, but long in meaning.

I found this book very enjoyable, clear and concise clarification of Mark Rashid's work. A must for anyone who has seen Mark and Kathleen. If not familiar with Mark's work, it won't matter this is comprehensive in it's own right. Love the story's to highlight each aspect. All been there all on the road to somewhere! All trying to be more focused, aware of breathing, our attitude and choices. Choose to read this book you won't be disappointed. Well Done Kathleen, your time on the road will benefit us all. 5.0 out of 5 stars Should be Required Reading For Everyone, January 19, 2007

This review is from: In the Company of Horses: A Year on the Road With Horseman Mark Rashid (Paperback)
What a delightful surprise this book is! I love Mark Rashid, so I bought it with the expectation of learning more about him and his training ideas. While Kathleen Lindley satisfies those needs, she also provides really great insights and help for both experienced riders and beginners. She is refreshingly honest about her own changes of attitude and heart. It is one of those books that makes me want to read it again as soon as I finished it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Vignettes of Self-discovery, December 29, 2007

After reading the first five pages of this book, I put my pen down as I knew I'd underline about 80 percent of what I was reading.

Chapter titles include 'Point of View', 'Softness', 'Mean Well' and within the chapters are well thought, priceless vignettes of self-discovery ranging from learning with Mark and horses, the life style of an on-the road clinicians, working with students and how this thoughtful style of consistent horsemanship changes self and permeates life.

This time through, I'm devouring it - skimming words, slowing down here and there, nodding in agreement, delighting in the aha-moments. As soon as I compete the book, I'll start my second reading - going slowly, savouring the Lindley's words and experiences along this horsemanship road that beckons and calls us just over the next hill.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rashid from a different point of view, May 27, 2008

This review is from: In the Company of Horses: A Year on the Road With Horseman Mark Rashid (Paperback)
Both enlightening and practical. This book is clearly written and makes points in way that Mark Rashid himself (I love his books) is not always able to. I think this comes from this author's more "traditional" horse training background, which so many of us share. (BTW: If you are into jumping then this book is definitely for you!)

I found this a wonderful complement to Mark's own books. It stands well on its own, too. I would recommend this as a first exposure to Mark Rashid's philosophies for anyone who wants to "get to the point" a little quicker than reading through all of Mark's books. But if you've already read all of Mark's books, you won't be disappointed either!

In the Company of Horses is such an inspiring story about not only finding your role as a horse trainer but also how to identify and work within your own psyche. There were so many ways that I could relate to what Kathleen had written about her own experiences, doubts, and insecurities. The inspiration comes when she helps the reader to realize their own potential for success- in life as well as with the horse.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great example, October 3, 2007
This review is from: In the Company of Horses: A Year on the Road With Horseman Mark Rashid (Paperback)
Of sharing true openness and self observation. Kathleen shows how being open minded to learning from not only Mark, horses and her students but also learning from herself and what she is really doing when she is working with a horse. Which shows that if you are not honest with yourself and what you are really doing, or not capable of doing while working with a horse, the horse will reveal it for you.

This book is hard to put down once you start reading it.
