I bought this mix because I had good experience with other products from miracle grow. I used it for all my orchid plants and few weeks later I starting to notice my plant is dying off slowly. I then figure out it was the soil in the mix that rotten the roots of my orchid. The mix contains too much soils with little barks, similar to regular garden soils. I repoted all my orchid using another brand mix. Wasted my money and time on this product, never will buy this for my orchid again.

I was incredibly surprised at the amount of potting soil in this mix. I've never seen that amount of dirt in an orchid mix before. I wish it had more bark!!! Won't buy this one again!

I have been growing orchids for years. As soon as I opened the bag, I knew this stuff was not going to be good for my orchids, which are mainly phaleonopsis (probably the most common variety of orchids). The particles are way too fine. As others have said, it is like potting soil, not orchid mix. The problem is that the roots of these orchids really need exposure to air and this mix is so fine that it will not permit proper air exposure. The comment that you can fix this by just giving your orchids a few drops of water at a time is really silly. Orchids are not desert plants. They like and require regular drenching with water. Do that with this mix and you will have root-rotted orchids in a couple of weeks or months, depending on how often you water them. The solution to this problem is a proper orchid mix with coarser particles that allow quick drainage and root aeration. I have never exposed my orchids to this stuff and I will not. I use it for other types of plants -- as regular potting soil or mulch. I recommend that other orchid growers do the same.

If I could rate this stuff as I feel, I'd give it about a 3.5 average, sometimes a 2 or sometimes 4 depending on the bag I get at the time. As a stand alone, I'd say forget it. But just about any commercial mix is going to be that way. You will have to tailor the amount of stuff to suit your individual plant's needs. I rated this one a little higher based off my experience with it. I find this one of the better MG soil mixes for my purposes.

I don't bother with the stated use. The bag is labeled for orchids but I don't have any, nor do I believe in following the marketing. I go by how the mix looks and feels and figure out how it can be used. To be honest I don't see this as a mix to be used straight out of the bag for orchids. It does have a high amount of peat moss. But that doesn't mean it can't be used for other plants that might require a soiless mix. For my plants I needed something that added some bark to the soil.

The plants I tried this on:

- African violets - mixed with about 50% perlite + MG African violet mix or MG cactus mix. Even if I did not add the other mixes and just stuck to about 50% mix of this stuff and perlite, I found it effective for starting African violet leaves. Given my growing conditions (very dry place with low humidity and rather warm), I'm tempted to cut back on the perlite and use more of this and their coarse mix. Advantages I saw - roots grew around the bark chips and didn't get compressed. (I'll also note I crumble up the largest chunks.)

- Christmas Cactus - I switched over from a predominately cactus/ black grainy soil type to this mixed with perlite and mg cactus mix. The plant took off and grew and stopped wilting all the time. This lasted for about 2-3 years until the soil broke down.

This "mix" is simply not appropriate for most orchids. The bark in the mix is WAY too fine/small, it retains water far too long and compacts extremely quickly. Do not be swayed by reviewers who give this stuff 5 stars... most of them are beginners and have not seen what this mix will do to orchids after a few weeks go by...or they are simply commenting on the fact that the mix arrived quickly and was the correct product that they'd ordered.

Orchids need air around their roots, and this mix does not allow adequate air flow. The orchids also like to dry out between waterings, and this mix holds water way too long, causing roots to eventually rot. I have also had fungus problems in every pot that has had this stuff in it, even if I used it to pot up a non-orchid (when I realized it was choking my orchids, I used it to pot up some anthuriums, and it stayed so wet that there were actually mushrooms and fluffy white stuff growing in my anthurium pots!)

The ONLY orchids I might consider using this mix for are terrestrial orchids that naturally grow in DIRT, such as the "Bamboo Orchid" from Hawaii, but you have to know what you're looking for to find terrestrial orchids that would do well in this stuff, and you won't find them at your local home improvement store.

I hear so many people tell me that they can't grow orchids because they always kill them, but the problem is actually that the orchids are potted in a poor mix or are simply staying too wet. If you pot your Phalaenopsis in this Miracle Gro stuff, it will die a long, depressing death. Please buy a mix with very coarse bark that also contains large pieces of Perlite and possibly compressed clay, such as "Special Orchid Mix" by Better-Gro (available on Amazon).
