Lisa, Renee, Nadine, and Kayla are childhood friends who have planned a vacation in Jamaica, little do they know that this trip may forever change their lives. Lisa and Renee are sisters and Lisa is hiding a secret. She has cancer and must have surgery to save her life but first she wants Renee, Nadine, and Kayla to change theirs.
Renee now on husband #3 and mother of 2 has spent her life looking for the love and approval of her step-father but finding it in the wrong men and for the wrong reasons. Currently separated from her husband, Renee is looking to have a good time and believes that "What happens in Jamaica, stays in Jamaica!" but after an one-nite stand, she gets more than she bargained for when she's ready to let go but he isn't. Kayla is plus-size and beautiful but suffers from low self-esteem and is in love with her married boyfriend Leroy, who is also the preacher of her church. Believing he is going to leave his wife and be with her, Kayla is shocked to learn his wife is pregnant. While in Jamaica, she meets a man who appears to appreciate her for the woman she is, will she finally be able to leave Leroy alone for good? Nadine believes that she has found her soulmate in Jordan but she is unable to accept the fact that she has fallen in love with a woman. Afraid of being disowned by her family, she is on the verge of losing Jordan unless she can finally accept that when it comes to love, does gender truly matter? In the Company of My Sistahs is a fast-paced read that is a wonderful story about friendship, love, betrayal and drama that will make you laugh and cry as you join these ladies on their adventure. If you liked Angie Daniels' previous books, Love Uncovered and When It Rains, you will LOVE In the Company of My Sistahs. I give this book 5 stars! Reviewed by Shay C of PeoplewholoveGoodBooks

Sex on the Beach,
By
This review is from: In The Company Of My Sistahs (Mass Market Paperback)
Lisa Miller is facing a hard time in her life. She must tell her sister and two closest friends she has cancer. In order to break the news to them gently, she arranges a trip to the island of Jamaica in romance writer's Angie Daniel's mainstream fiction, a sort of Sistergirl meets Women's fiction in In the Company of my Sistahs.
The story is told from the perspectives of four thirty-something women. Renee, Lisa's sister is the only voice told in first person and whose story appears to be the main focus. Renee is a piece of work. A romance writer, she is loud, boisterous and curses like a crew of sailors. She has a one track mind, in search of sex, sex and more sex, running after anything in pants. Oh and by the way, she is married. She has a long distance marriage and has to make a decision if she will finally join her husband out of state. The other stories including Lisa's were told in third person. Lisa has the great husband, career and financial stability only to find her self with ovarian cancer and unable to have children. Kayla is overweight, besieged with low self-esteem and is involved in an affair with her married pastor who keeps telling her he is leaving his wife. Will a new love be just the change she needs? And as the Sistergirl theme has evolved in the new millennium, the story would not be complete without one of the women being on the down low and that would be attorney Nadine, who is trying to come to grips with her lesbianism. With the theme of one of the women having a serious illness, I wanted this novel to be more than a 1990s Sistergirl theme, where the women talk ugly to one another and who continually back themselves into inappropriate situations in regards to men but there was not anything that made this novel stand out from the crowd. In Women's fiction, it is supposed to be all about the emerging growth of the women characters. In that respect, other than Lisa who was already grounded, Nadine was the only one who seemed to grow by accepting her lesbianism. Renee had no boundaries in her life or her friendships and this reviewer found it hard to picture her as a successful author with the hood rat persona she wore so boldly. And poor Kayla-she could not buy a clue-was destined to live a life of low self-esteem and poor self-image, accepting the leavings of others, letting life happen to her. I wanted to separate myself from my feelings of these hard to digest characters from the plot of the story but unfortunately it fell flat. The issue of Lisa's illness was pushed to the background and not addressed until the last fifty or so pages while Renee's shenanigans overshadowed everything else. There were too many repetitions, reoccurring scenes and major storylines were wrapped up quickly in the last few pages. The lovely setting in beautiful Montego Bay is what kept me going. The author did a good job with placing readers on this beautiful island and the descriptions of the marketplace, vendors and Jamaican natives were well done. The portrayals of the main characters were well developed as were the depictions of the Jamaican men as vibrant, virile lovers. Dera Williams APOOO Book Club

Pleasantly Surprised,
By
This review is from: In the Company of My Sistahs (Paperback)
I was desperate to read a good book, and I read this book and was really pleasantly surprised by how good it was. I liked all the characters in this book. This book was easy to follow and hard to put down once you start reading. I initially thought this would be in similarity to How Stella Got her Groove Back, but I think it was better. This book is about 4 women who share special bonds. One woman is dying of cancer and suggests a trip, so that she can break it to her 2 friends and sister that she is fighting a losing battle. Her sister is in a loveless marraige, and is very promiscuous with others. One woman's marriage has fallen apart and she is now fighting to find out who she is and has discovered she is a Lesbian. The other woman is overweight, and a single mother, and as many insecurities, she rely's very much on her religion. She has accepted a relationship with the Reverend at her church, and is convinced he will eventually leave his wife for her. This book is good, its about the love and bonds, that these women share, and acceptance of one another. They gain closure from eachother. You wil grow to love and hate the women in this novel, but overall it was really good. I think whoever purchases this book will really enjoy it, I did!!

How much trouble can four sexy, sassy, and stubborn women get into when they spend a week together in Jamaica? More than you can imagine.
Lisa Miller has been living the good life for years. She has a wonderful husband who adores her and would give his very life to make her happy. She wishes that her sister Renee and her childhood friends could find the same type of love. For years, Lisa has watched them search for love in all of the wrong places. Hoping to find a way to break some bad news of her own, Lisa has planned a vacation in Jamaica with them. She hopes that her own problems will make a difference in the lives of the women she loves. Renee Moore is a twice-divorced romance writer and mother of two who plans to use her time in Jamaica to find that perfect fling. Although she's married to husband number three, that won't stop her from getting her party on. She's on a mission to find that "Jamaican Mandingo" to help fill the void in her heart. Renee will soon learn; however, that her actions have consequences as she comes face to face with danger. Nadine Hill is a successful attorney who has it all together professionally, but her personal life is a mess. For years she has been fighting her true desires and now must come to terms with her attraction to women. Afraid of what others may think, she struggles to listen to her heart. As the daughter of a Baptist minister, Kayla Sparks dreams of marrying a man of the church. Overweight, she struggles with self esteem issues and is naďve when it comes to the opposite sex. When a handsome reverend enters her life, she thinks he is a gift from God. What's standing in her way? His wife and kids. Lisa, Renee, Nadine, and Kayla are four women who share the bond of sisterhood. Through laughter, tears, and drama, the lives of these women will change forever during their vacation and Jamaica will never be the same. As the drama unfolds and secrets are revealed, they begin to look at themselves and their future in a whole new way. Angie Daniels is a talented writer and storyteller. She has written a fast-paced and entertaining book with well-developed characters; each with a personality of her own. This book is a page turner that will tap into every known emotion-laughter, fear, anger, tears. IN THE COMPANY OF MY SISTAHS is about friendship and accepting loved ones as they are. It is a must read for anyone who understands and cherishes the bond of sisterhood. Reviewed by Tabatha Taylor for The RAWSISTAZ™ Reviewers

Lisa Miller invites her sister, Renee Moore, and her two best friends, Nadine Hill and Kayla Sparks for a girls get away in Jamaica. Lisa is married, grounded, dedicated, and pretty much a goody two shoes but she has an ulterior motive for this escape with her closest confidantes. Renee is amped for this trip, trying to figure out a way to get rid of husband #3, she's sent her children to their father and is in search of someone to help her shake her groove thang! Nadine is hiding behind her taboo sexual desires with a promising career. Kayla is hooked on Jesus and so sprung on religion that she allows her pastor, the good Reverend Leroy Brown to make his mistress.
In The Company of My Sistahs is full of an array of dramatic scenes brimming with laughs, love, loyalty, and lessons. Angie Daniels did an amazing job with this novel. The characters are funny, the scenes are exciting, the plot is entertaining, and in summation it is a very realistic read that exhibits the insecurities these ladies harbor, the pain they endure, and in essence their bickering and snide remarks only hide their inner strength as they face and conquer all adversity in the company of their sistahs.

Sistahs, what is really going on?,

This review is from: In the Company of My Sistahs (Paperback)
I like this book a lot, I really do, I actually read the sequal first and then this one, which its really good but it also makes you think about how you look at yourself. I rememeber reading it this week and thinking, why are these seemingly sucessful women so completely at odds with themselves. Kayla's character got on my nerves so bad that there were points where it was painful almost to read the chapters relating to her. I think that this book is very good for introspection because it really made me look at how I see myself. I mean Kayla is a big girl and there were moments when I wanted to just shake her and ask her why she would be so down on herself. It was a good cross-section of life and I really loved Lisa Miller's character, there were tones of my own personality in her. Its a great airplane book, or vacation book, fast read.

Sistahs with drama,
By Denny "Den" (London,UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: In the Company of My Sistahs (Paperback)
This is the first book I have read by this writer and I look forward to reading many more especially the sequel to this. Four friends go on holiday to Jamaica each one with major issues.
Lisa - happily married, invited her sister and 2 friends to Jamaica to tell them a sad and terrible secret, will she have the courage to do it? Kayla - single mother, with major self esteem issues. Holding on to a married minister despite the good man that comes her way. Will she wake up and smell the Pastors bull before its too late? Nadine-is in the closet, in fact she refuses to accept there is a closet. And hopes that a holiday fling with a man will help her get over the fact that she is love with a woman. Renee - younger sister of Lisa, twice divorced, married woman who does not love husband number 3 so cheats on him regularly. Loud mouth, brash, sexually confident, legs open like 7-11. But is all this a front to hide a childhood hurt? The book is good a bit too long, 80 chapters tho most of them are short. I did not understand why Renee was written in the first person and took up most of the book. It would have been better to hear more of Lisa's story. Only 2 of the characters get closure, so one must read the sequel to see what happens to the other 2.
