Book Description

June 1996
Finally back in print, In the Company of Newfies is one of the most beautiful books ever written about dogs. It has become a classic and a collectible. It is a book of love and loss...for owners of all breeds, not just Newfoundlands. Thousands have found, after the loss of their dogs, enduring comfort in it. Thousands have found eye-opening insights into the hearts of their dogs. Lerman recounts a year in the life of one litter, and in the lives of the rest of the dog family in her household who help to rear and train the pups. It is a year of many victories and some losses, and it is through both that the reader experiences a full sweep of the emotions dogs and humans share. By book's end, the reader will have laughed at the antics of the irrepressible Toby; admired the quiet strength and intelligence of the mother, Molly; delighted in the growing maturity of the pups Rosie and Silky; cheered as Ishtar takes her first championship ribbon; and wept for the death of noble Ben. Couples read it out loud to each other.

In the Company of Newfies is a visionary book filled with stunning insights that teach us much about the profound bond between human and dog, about the almost limitless possibilities in our relationships with them. Lerman's observations, keen and deeply intuitive, reveal dogs' thinking and behavior in new and wonderful ways. Reading her book, it is hard to deny her belief that dogs want to commune with people, want to leave their wild selves and join our human community.

Perhaps only a novelist of Rhoda Lerman's skill and sensitivity could have ranged so freely to tell us so much.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Ben came into the family as a pet, opening the door to the author's complete devotion to a breed. A decade later, novelist Lerman (Animal Acts) breeds and trains champion Newfoundland dogs in Cazenovia, N.Y. She tells a captivating story of a year spent with a new litter and six adult dogs. It appears that Newfies form an extraordinary bond with humans; Lerman thinks they even regard themselves as human. She gives some remarkable instances of communication between herself and Ben and offers many diverting tales?about Molly and her pups, Ishtar at a dog show, party animal Toby and about the breed in general. Lerman found that, early in this century, Newfies, noted as rescue dogs, were caged at the docks in Halifax for fishermen to rent by the day.

From Library Journal

This is a book for anyone who has shared life with a dog. Lerman raises prize-winning Landseer Newfoundlands at her upstate New York home. Her book chronicles a year in the life of one of her litters, from birth to young adulthood, and introduces the reader to her almost-human canine family. Lerman and her dogs have transcended the traditional boundaries between dogs and humans to reach a higher level of communication and understanding. This is evident throughout, as the reader gets to know the unique personality and characteristics of each of Lerman's dogs. These animals clearly see themselves as members of the family, and we smile at their antics, share their triumphs, and cry for their losses. Lerman (Animal Acts, LJ 3/15/94) is an experienced author with six novels to her credit, and her writing style is captivating. The book will appeal to dog lovers and breeders everywhere and is recommended for purchase where interest warrants.?Deborah Emerson, Leroy V. Good Lib., Monroe Community Coll., Rochester, N.Y.

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved this book!, July 31, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: In the Company of Newfies: A Shared Life (Hardcover)
It is lyrical and mesmerizing, beautiful and sad. The author has an extraordinary interest in bonding with her dogs, so we are treated to her extensive musings on their personalities. Why do they do what they do? What are their relationships with each other? This is a quick read that reminds me of THE HIDDEN LIFE OF DOGS. In both books the authors quickly bring us into the inner workings of their homes where dogs are central. It helps that the subject of IN THE COMPANY OF NEWFIES is one of the most beautiful and fascinating of breeds--Landseer Newfoundlands. This is a great book

5.0 out of 5 stars An Emotional Education / New Insight To Newfie Thinking, January 9, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: In the Company of Newfies: A Shared Life (Hardcover)

This book was a Christmas gift for my husband from our 13 month old Newfie girl. Snuggled together, we spent most our "together" time reading about Rhoda's solumn commitment and unconditional love to her Newfie family. Her example has helped my husband understand and overcome some of the pitfalls of bringing a 9 month old Newfie (our second) into our household and given us new insight in the behavior of our new "baby" as to why and how she expresses herself. With opened our minds, we try to understand her possible way of thinking.

I could not help the feelings of lonliness and sorrow that flooded over me when the book came to an end. Ben, Molly, Pippa and the rest had suddenly become part of our lives and now they were no longer there. I wanted more. I still want more. We look forward to the sequel to see how Rosie and Silkie grow up. We miss them all.

To Rhoda Lerman: You are an exceptional woman with an exceptional family. Thank you for allowing us to share a year in your family's life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heartfelt Writing, January 4, 2006
Although the title suggests this book may be only for Newfie owners, it will touch the heart of most dog owners. If you value your dog as a true member of your family, you will understand exactly where Ms. Lerman's sentiment comes from. Whether you have dogs or simply love dogs, you will likely find this book touching and will go away with a smile.
