5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating look at the making of a Broadway cast album, May 7, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Company (Original Cast Album) [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This documentary, which received only limited distribution in 1970, provides a fascinating look at the long, involved process of transferring a Broadway musical into a successful recording. Unlike movie soundtracks which are dubbed and edited from the original session tapes, Broadway cast albums are recorded - usually in one long session - a few days after the show opens. With the singers and orchestra performing live, there is considerable tension. One mistake, and the entire number must be re-recorded from scratch. Watch as the cast of the award winning musical lay down take after take, under the watchful supervision of album producer Thomaz Shepherd, and composer-lyricist Stephen Sondheim, trying to get that definative take that will provide the home listener with the excitement of the stage show. The highlight of the tape is the 3AM session with Elaine Stritch, struggling with a tired voice as she tries to successfully tape her "Ladies Who Lunch" number. END

5.0 out of 5 stars My new Favourite-Film-Ever, July 3, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Company (Original Cast Album) [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I recently had the great fortune of discovering that a friend has this film, taped from a PBS broadcast some years ago. IT REALLY SHOULD BE RE-RELEASED; I WOULD LOVE TO OWN A COPY.The genius of Sondheim, the genius of Pennebaker, the sincerity, tenacity and remarkable talent of the Company cast .... I have watched this film twice in 2 days, and haven't stopped singing.
