Book Description

January 1, 2005
A timeless tale of pride, loyalty and the bonds of friendship Towards the end of the fourteenth century, much of England's population is seething over the unpopular poll tax levied under the reign of Richard II. In the small Essex village of Fobbing, a band of peasants, brought to breaking point by poverty, is incited to revolt. Led by the blacksmith John Melle and his best friend, Tom Baker, the peasants make their way into London to protest against the unjust taxes that are causing such hardship across the country . . .

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

It's the late fourteenth century in England, and the young boy king, Richard II, is on the throne. Life is extremely difficult under the feudal system, with high taxes, rampant poverty, and little hope. The peasants everywhere are ready to revolt; all they need is a leader who can channel their dissatisfaction into energy. In the small village of Fobbing, young blacksmith John Melle and his best friend, Tom Baker, are initially uneasy about joining in any revolt. But when the local parson encourages the villagers to march on London to confront King Richard, John and Tom decide to take part. The march tests the young pair's mettle, but when John embarks on a clandestine affair with Tom's attractive wife, it nearly destroys their friendship. Populated with memorable characters, lusty, bawdy, gruesome, and full of rich period detail, this is first-rate historical adventure. Emily Melton
