Total Rip Off!,
By Bob Booker (Denver , CO USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Company of Strangers (Hardcover)
I don't think I've ever been so disappointed with a book. No, not disappointed, ANGRY. I was a bit wary when the edition I got had a red banner on the cover that says "As thrilling as John le Carre or your money back!". When you have to sell your stuff by referencing somebody else's stuff, it's a bad sign. How can I get back the multiple hours that I spent on this tripe? I've stopped reading books after 100 or 150 pages before, but never have I gotten 300 pages into a book and become so disgusted that even skimming was too tedious. We start in Germany, then move to Portugal, where the main love story has a tragic ending. Suddenly, we jump ahead to the 1960s and go through pages and pages of the heroine's mother dying. Then we're in the '70s and the cold war. And, wonder of wonders--shades of that horrible Pearl Harbor movie--the "dead" hero is alive! I feared that was coming about a hundred pages ago, but was hoping that a professional writer wouldn't be such a sop. I think the ending tied everything together, but I didn't care. 464 pages: 250 story, 214 filler. Don't waste time or money on this book. And, from my point of view, don't ever support this author who writes with less intelligence than your average internet blogger.
