Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

This adult sequel to MacAlister's YA paranormals Got Fangs? and Circus of the Darned follows Francesca, ex-girlfriend and perforce soul mate of the ultra-hot vampire Benedikt, as she tries to live her own life. After rescuing her roommate from Norse god Loki's evil minions, Fran heads to the GothFaire in Germany in search of her missing mother. When she finds Ben with evil Naomi, she flips out. While resolving her emotional issues with Ben, she stumbles on one of her mother's secrets and meets Ben's shape-shifting brother, David, who has problems of his own. European myths get a workout in Fran's wisecracking narrative, at its best when her lusty Viking ghost guardians are on the scene. The pace is so fast and the sex so hot that the reader scarcely notices the lack of emotional, setting, or character depth. (Nov.) (c)

From Booklist

Fran was a young witch of 16 when she became Ben’s Beloved, bound to him by fate to save his immortal soul—as if puberty isn’t hard enough. Over the next five years, she fights hard for space, and time, to grow into her own person, pushing Ben away. But when her mother goes missing, she returns to GothFaire to find her, only to find Ben in another woman’s arms. Having not only to face Ben’s secrets, but also a vengeful Norse god, will Fran be able to find out what has really happened to her mother, and to her own heart, in time? Though at times the zaniness in this newest installment in the Dark Ones series can feel overwhelming, MacAlister delivers another tonic dose of her signature blend of steamy sexual tension and touching romance. --Nina C. Davis

More About the Author

For as long as she can remember, Katie MacAlister has loved reading. Growing up in a family where a weekly visit to the library was a given, Katie spent much of her time with her nose buried in a book. Despite her love for novels, she didn't think of writing them until she was contracted to write a non-fiction book about software. Since her editor refused to allow her to include either witty dialogue or love scenes in the software book, Katie swiftly resolved to switch to fiction, where she could indulge in world building, tormenting characters, and falling madly in love with all her heroes.

Two years after she started writing novels, Katie sold her first romance, Noble Intentions. More than thirty books later, her novels have been translated into numerous languages, been recorded as audiobooks, received several awards, and placed on the New York Times, USA Today, and Publishers Weekly bestseller lists. She also writes for the young adult audience as Katie Maxwell.

Katie lives in the Pacific Northwest with her husband and dogs, and can often be found lurking around online. You are welcome to visit her at http://www.katiemacalister.com

1.0 out of 5 stars this does NOT belong in the adult section, November 22, 2010
This review is from: In the Company of Vampires: A Dark Ones Novel (Mass Market Paperback)
I have read most of katie macalister's books and liked the humor in it. the silliness of the books were funny and the characters' adulthood wasn't questionable. In this book, I felt like I was reading a racy young adult novel. The jokes in the book were over the top like she was trying too hard to make readers laugh but it came off as immature. i rolled my eyes so many times reading this book. This book is a spin off from her young adult series and she should have kept it there.

2.0 out of 5 stars Don't be fooled: This is NOT a Dark One's novel, December 4, 2010

This review is from: In the Company of Vampires: A Dark Ones Novel (Mass Market Paperback)
I have not read the previous YA stories about Ben and Fran and felt like I was playing catchup the ENTIRE book. I don't like to read too much about a book before I read it because I want to be surprised by what happens. I wish I would've read reviews on this book before I read it. This was NOT a Dark One's novel. This was a continuation of her YA fiction. None of the other previous characters from Dark One's novels were around and I feel a little cheated. She did not lay out the steps of becoming a Beloved like she has in other novels and I just didn't feel like this fit into the series.

2.0 out of 5 stars Silly, too immature., November 14, 2010

This review is from: In the Company of Vampires: A Dark Ones Novel (Mass Market Paperback)
I finished the book, only because I always give the author the benifit of doubt until the final page. This time there was no redemption. The subject matter was too adult for me to recommend it to teens although the writing was definately at that level. The dialogue was choppy, the humor in your face and the numorous typo/grammar errors annoying.
