this does NOT belong in the adult section,

This review is from: In the Company of Vampires: A Dark Ones Novel (Mass Market Paperback)
I have read most of katie macalister's books and liked the humor in it. the silliness of the books were funny and the characters' adulthood wasn't questionable. In this book, I felt like I was reading a racy young adult novel. The jokes in the book were over the top like she was trying too hard to make readers laugh but it came off as immature. i rolled my eyes so many times reading this book. This book is a spin off from her young adult series and she should have kept it there.

Don't be fooled: This is NOT a Dark One's novel,

I have not read the previous YA stories about Ben and Fran and felt like I was playing catchup the ENTIRE book. I don't like to read too much about a book before I read it because I want to be surprised by what happens. I wish I would've read reviews on this book before I read it. This was NOT a Dark One's novel. This was a continuation of her YA fiction. None of the other previous characters from Dark One's novels were around and I feel a little cheated. She did not lay out the steps of becoming a Beloved like she has in other novels and I just didn't feel like this fit into the series.

I finished the book, only because I always give the author the benifit of doubt until the final page. This time there was no redemption. The subject matter was too adult for me to recommend it to teens although the writing was definately at that level. The dialogue was choppy, the humor in your face and the numorous typo/grammar errors annoying.

In the Company of Vampires follows Fran as she returns to the Circus of the Darned and is reunited with her teenage flame Ben. Fran's mother is missing and the hysterical Viking ghosts have reappeared forcing Fran to return to the goth faire and forcing her to deal with Ben the hunky dark one who she is eternally linked to.
This book is written in Katie MacAlisters classic style which readers will either love or hate. The writing is silly and laugh out loud absurd and full of steamy sex and crazy co-stars.

In The Company Of Vampires is the adult continuation of Got Fangs and Circus of the Darned.
Five years have passed since Fran left Ben to decide if she wanted to be his Beloved. When she hears that her mother is missing, she returns to the Gothfaire and finds Ben in the arms of another woman. Fireworks happen as she realizes that she doesn't want anyone else touching Ben. With her Viking ghosts offering to slay Ben, wanting to protect her, Gods and power hungry immortals to fight, her mother to find, and finding her way to loving and accepting Ben's love, Fran's life is anything but mundane. In The Company of Vampires is laugh out loud, hilarious fun. Katie MacAlister always has the zaniest characters and dialog. I'm ready for the sequel to this one to see what happens next with Fran, Ben, and the Vikings.

If you love Katie MacAlister's Dark Ones, you are really in for a treat. They just keep better and better, and even if you love Fran, you will still want to take Ben home for yourself!

great character line,
This review is from: In the Company of Vampires: A Dark Ones Novel (Mass Market Paperback)
I love the characters in the books by this author. She spins the tale of several generations and species of family. They seem like a paranormal yet caring family. Love her writing. can hardly wait for the next ones out.

I wanted to like this book - but could only get to page 50 before I just gave up. I could not stand another minute of the quips. I thought I was reading about silly thirteen year old teenagers. Key would silly. Every line was silly the charters were silly and child like. I ususally like her books - which is why I purchased this one. What a disappointment.

not what I was expecting, but ok,

I have read all of the Dark Ones books, and all of the dragon books. I thought I knew what to expect. I guess I didn't read the description well enough and just assumed that because it was a Dark Ones novel, that it was a standalone adult novel. I have spent most of the book trying to figure out how I missed what was clearly a prequel or something. Now I realize that it was because I don't read YA.
Other than being disappointed that this book wasn't what I was expecting, it's a pretty good book. Funny, quirky and at times sexy. I would have liked more sexual tension though. I am used to the Beloveds having to come around to the idea. I guess Fran did have to come around to it, but we missed all of that, this book jumped pretty much into them trying to hammer out a relationship and solve a mystery. |
