The Company of Wolves (Blu-ray),
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Company of Wolves [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
I saw The Company Of Wolves on it's initial release in the mid eighties, expecting yet another horror romp similar to The Howling, etal. After all, Cannon Films was promoting it as such. What I saw was a completely mesmerizing, surreal, beautiful fairytale from the mind of director Neil Jordan. I walked out of the theater stunned by the sheer poetic beauty of this little small budget film. I bought it on VHS, Laserdisc, and both regions 1 & 2 DVD, as they were released, but there always seemed to problems with the transfers. This Blu-ray (region 0, btw), is the best version released at this date. The blacks are dense, the reds are brilliant. Plus, we get the added bonus on Neil Jordan's commentary. If you're expecting horror, go elsewhere ... however, if you enjoy rich storytelling, surreal imagery with a dreamlike quality ... this is a film to get. Until someone releases the definitive collector's version with all the bells and whistles, this disc is a must own for film lovers. It plays beautifully on both my Sharp & Samsung Players. Admittedly, I am a fan of this small gem, so temper this review with a grain of salt. Bravo!

Not very HD,

This release works great on American players, but be aware that the dark, gloomy and extremely foggy nature of the photography makes this a very flat presentation. It looks ok, certainly better than DVD, but it does not have the 3D pop you may be accustomed to on other Blu-ray releases.

4 Stars = ClassicThis fantasy/horror film is loosely based on "Little Red Riding Hood." Dreamy, surrealism, enhanced by gorgeous photography, top notch acting, & a great script/story line, it is quite unlike any other Werewolf film I've seen. It has a way of getting under your skin! Sink your teeth, eyes, & ears into this one!
