4.0 out of 5 stars A good SUPPLEMENT...
... but the problem is that, while this book is well written, it can't HELP but to be hopelessly out of date. Compaq revises its courseware and tests quarterly, while it can easily take a year or more to get a book like this to market. This book was originally supposed to be published in September '99 - even then, it took another five months (until February 28, 2000)...

This book covers maybe 70% of the Systems Technolgy Exam, 50% of the NT Intergration Exam and 50% of the Systems Management Exam. Syngress and the author's should be embrassed to have this book still on the market. I was better off buying the Exam Preps from Boson. Don't waste your time read the useless information contained between the covers of this book. I have made the decision not to use any of the Syngress books for any future certifications that I am pursuing.

Because at least I could have used it as a notebook at a later time. I feel sorry for the trees that had to be chopped down to provide the paper used in this book. This material is as useless a bicycle with square tires. This book is an embarrassment to Syngress what a complete waste of money. Do not buy this book under any circumstances. This book got a rating of 1 because I could not go any lower

This book is not at all adequate. From what can figure out this book was written for the previous edition of the exams. The new exam numbers are just put on the cover to draw attention. The material is out of date. Don't buy this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Need more material than this book, April 11, 2000
By
This review is from: Compaq ASE Certification Study Guide (Exams 010-397, 010-078, & 010-067) (Hardcover)
This is a pretty good book to help you understand the frame work on Compaq servers, but for taking the ASE tests you will need more information. With this book alone it coves about 70% of the exam objectives you will need to know to pass. I just passed the 010-397 test and with out the help from the Boson test quizer I would of been popped. Their is a lot of terminology that they skiped on that you need to know and the 8-way processing they do not even mention. In all so far for the price and information you get it is worth it, but you will need more info to pass the tests than the book for sure on the 397 test. With the quizer and the book you should do good.

3.0 out of 5 stars WARNING! A good book, but not sufficient for the exams!, March 30, 2000

First, I apologize to anyone who purchased this book based on my first review. I've still only read the first sixteen chapters, but started concentrating on studying for the test rather than simply reading the content. I still stand behind the following - the book is very well written. If you are looking for a basic book which explains the topics included in the table of contents, this is the book for you. The each topic and chapter can hold its own without having to rely on information presented earlier. For a first edition book of this size, the number of errors are surprisingly small. However, as a study guide for the Compaq exams listed on the title, it falls horribly short. Again, I've been concentrating on the first exam thus far, but rather than topics for exam 010-397, it covers the topics necessary for 010-066, the PREVIOUS version of this exam, and the differences are very significant. The new version of the test also covers newer generation Pentium chips, Alpha, Tandem/NonStop technology, newer buses, memory, a large number of new terms (bus snarfing anyone?) and the top of the line ProLiant XX00 servers. I haven't confirmed this yet, but I assume the second and third units will cover tests 010-068 and 010-057 rather than 010-078 and 010-067 as advertised on the book cover. Again, the book will provide a mental framework onto which additional information can be added, but the necessary information for the exams is NOT contained in this book. To anyone contemplating the ASE program, make sure to download and read the Self Assessment Guides from the Compaq Training Web page first.

I agree with the two other reviews- this book gives a good framework, but you will need more details in your studies.

This book is a bit old, but if you work with older Compaq Servers as I do then it is fine. A valuable resource even if you do not intend to sit the Compaq ASE exams.

This review is from: Compaq ASE Certification Study Guide (Exams 010-397, 010-078, & 010-067) (Hardcover)
After using the Compaq courseware and this book I noticed that it does not have enough information to pass the exams. Some basic information (ex. numeric pages alert codes) is missing. I don't recommend it.

For those of you trying to save thousands of dollars by skipping ASE classes, it's not going to happen with this book. I took the Compaq Systems Technologies test today, and at least a third of the questions were not referenced in this book. ( Especially the newer technologies such as the Profusion chipset) If you could magically go back in time and take the older exams (10-056 etc.) this book may be a bit more useful...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good info but not a study guide, March 28, 2000
This review is from: Compaq ASE Certification Study Guide (Exams 010-397, 010-078, & 010-067) (Hardcover)
This is a good book that will give you an ok background on Compaq servers/technologies and management. But I wouldn't call it much of a study guide. By no means do I expect do get the answers to the test, but some material that you will not see on the test is simply not covered in this book. For example, what are the bus speeds of L1 and L2 cache on the various Pentium family of processors? You may see that on the 397 test, you won't find this information in this study guide.

To pass the test you need the class materials and the SAG. This is a ok book, but I would not label it as a Study Guide.
