At 13 by 10.7 by 1.6 inches and a mere 5.7 pounds, the 2105US is easy to carry yet spacious enough to offer an accommodating full-size, 88-key keyboard with embedded numeric keypad and a sizable 14.1-inch XGA TFT display supporting 1,024 x 768 resolution. Compaq has chosen a capable 1.5 GHz Mobile AMD Athlon XP processor to power the unit, and matched it with a generous 512 MB of DDR SDRAM system memory (upgradable to a massive 1,024 MB). It has added a powerful 64 MB ATI Mobility Radeon AGP 4X video processor and a large 40 GB hard drive. Despite its cost-conscious price, the 2105US is ready to handle any typical notebook task and even some 3-D-intensive applications and games.
The system is not short of amenities. With the integrated DVD/CD-RW combo drive (24x/8x/8x CD, 8x DVD), you can back up your data, burn and enjoy audio CDs, and play your favorite movies. Using the internal 10/100 Mbps Ethernet adapter or 56K modem, you can access e-mail, networks, or the Internet at both low and high speeds. Other perks include a 16-bit Sound Blaster Pro-compatible audio chip, two internal stereo speakers, two USB ports for plug-and-play peripherals, parallel and serial ports, headphone-out and microphone-in connections, and an S-Video out. High-speed USB and IEEE FireWire connections are not included.
Compaq has pre-installed a broad range of software, including Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Norton AntiVirus 2002, Microsoft Works, Quicken Financial Center, and Microsoft Money 2003.

Excellent machine for the price,

I have had this machine for about a week now and am completely impressed. This is my first notebook and I purchased it for school and to travel with for work. The battery life runs just under 4 hours at this point and the memory seems more than adaquate. I chose this machine over a similarly outfitted Toshiba due to it's weight (it's almost 2 pounds lighter) and I have no regrets.

The laptop looks very nice and well designed. The colot scheme with silver/carbon black is great. The keyboard is well laid out. The fan isn't noisy and mobile Athlon is great!Battery life is in excess of 3 hrs and laptop doesn't get hot either. The LCD is good and has good range of viewing angle. The warranty support from Compaq is better than HP, atlhough both are same companies now. If you want blue scheme instead of silver try the HP ZE4200 series and its same hardware as Compaq. The prices are low in most local stores than Amazon. Kudos to HP/Compaq for designing such low cost and fully functional laptop.

I purchased this laptop to use as a portable version of my desktop, and I have to say I am impressed. I can't explain the others who posted their opinions, but I would encourage you to read some of their other "reviews". To start with I have had absolutley no problem running any software or playing any DVD movies. I'm not sure what the others tried to run, but legal (non-warez) software has run great. The performance-to-dollar ratio is great! This notebook feels very comfortable to use. The keyboard takes a little getting used to, but then again most notebook keyboards do. As for as looks, well it looks like an HPaq notebook. Nothing fancy but not terrible. There are plenty of ports to connect peripherals to, and the screen looks great. There were some disappointing aspects too. The first was the omission of a floppy drive. While this is not a show-stopper, it is a consideration if you are "floppy dependent". The shared video has never been a faavorite of mine, but it handles DVD's with no dropped frames. Last is the slow CD burner. Using an 8x8x24 burner is a definate drawback to me. There is no reason to use such an antiquated drive when a 24x would have only cost a little more. Overall, this is a great notebook for the price. If you are looking for a total desktop replacement, you will be disappointed. However, as a sometimes mobile work machine, with a little fun in between this one's great.
