I have had the 715 for one week. For the money, I think it is a good buy. I had trouble finding any review (any) of this model. However, after a week I would say the following:Pros: Price, DVD/CDr, keyboards, speed, portability Bottom line- this is my 6th laptop in my life. I had a Compaq Presario 305 that I thought was [junk]... Battery "broke?" Performance was lousy. I am a systems analyst and work alot with computers. I am impressed with the 715 keeping in mind, I only paid $... My Dell Inspiron 7000 parked next to me, cost $.... This smokes the Dell. Plus, DVD play back has been nice as is the integrated CD writer. Fun! I have a minidisc recorder and wanted something to compliment my audio interest (habit). I recommend this for anyone who does not need a really hardcore system. For most of us, this seems to be a really nice laptop. Looks cool too.

Linux on this computer,

I am a computer science major at Georgia Tech, and needed a laptop for my programming courses. I bought the 715us because it was relatively cheap compared to other models, and it was/is one of the most powerful notebooks I found on the market. I have been extremely happy with it so far. Windows XP works flawlessy, as do all the programs. But since I needed linux for my classes, I decided to dual boot it into Mandrake 8.1 IT'S AWESOME! Mandrake was incredibly easy to install, and detected most of the hardware for me. Things to note:So far, the sound WILL NOT work under linux. I have seen others complaining about this on the internet, and so far no solution. The hard drive does not support more than three partitions. If you are going to dual boot, keep this in mind.

Recently picked up the 715US model at my best buy retailer. I've had great success with this model. It is also my first notebook and has been very easy to setup and configure. This notebook stands out not only in performance and features (CDRW, DVD, etc,.) but also looks great in its stylish silver casing. It's beautiful! Though I'm not yet fond of XP, this system runs smoothly without hiccups. A good investment for those looking for a medium-ranged notebook.

you already know what it's specs are so i won't bother writing about that. Not only does these notebook loke good but it has the best processor(AMD Athlon 4). It's the most powerful for a laptop due to Pentium 4 does not run on such a thin laptop.Price is GOOD AND THESE PRODUCT SHOULD BE RATED 10/5(SOME HOW?)

I got my Compaq 715 not too long ago and I am very impressed with it and it's capabilities. I hadn't seen much about this perticular laptop, but I figured that at such a great cost and with a lot for the money - it wouldn't be bad. And it's not. I have owned several diffent computers before, but this one stands out because it is so well done. It's a very attractive computer and easily portable. I have no complaints about this one at all. I really can't wait until I get down to some big time work on it because then I can really appreciate the amount resources it has.

I am a graduate student of Gerogia Tech. (I'm not a novice in computer.)I bought 715US a month ago. The price is good, and it shows very good performance. However, it is NOT very stable. I have experienced some troubles/problems. For example, I could not turn off the notebook several times, so I had to plug out of it. And, it would shut down by itself suddenly when I watching a movie file from CD-ROM. So I had to move the files from CD to harddisk everytime. I doubted Windows XP preinstalled in this notebook, so I installed Windows 2000, which is regarded as the most stable OS from MS. However, I couldn't find some hardware driver files needed for Windows 2000. The installation CD-ROM and COMPAQ's internet site do not provide these driver files so that the users can't change OS other than the preinstalled one. So I had to get the driver files from the hardware manufacturers homepage or use the drivers for other similar COMPAQ notebook model. After installing Windows 2000, it becomes more fast and stable. However it is not perfect yet.

Compaq Presario 715US Notebook (1.2-GHz Athlon 4, 256 MB RAM, 20 GB hard drive)by Compaq is a peice of JUNK and the folks at Compaq are worse than their product. My warranty was for one year - parts & labor. I sent the Presaio 715 US Notebook and was told it would cost $690 and it is not covered under the warranty. It was a problem with the nick card slot and I was told I caused the problem. Even if I caused the problem, and I didn't, the warranty should fix the problem. I own two other laptops (Dells) and have never had a problem getting support on the phone or repairs. Compaqs are junk and if you buy one, you'll be sorry. Mark my word!

I bought presario 715 us three weeks ago, and I upgraded for memory 256 MB to 512 MB. That's great for running simultaneous programs. But sometimes I run the internet or online, the cursor doesn't response and I cannot use touchpad to close program. That's really bad because I have to start doing my work again. However, everything is fine....and engine running more time for battery Lion...

Do NOT buy this laptop,

This review is from: Compaq Presario 715US Laptop (1.2-GHz Athlon 4, 256 MB RAM, 20 GB hard drive) (Personal Computers)
I bought this laptop from Best Buy and within 3 weeks it started failing. It would power down spontaneously. I called the Compaq tech support hotline. They told me that they have not heard of any problems with this model of laptop. I took it in to Best Buy and they exchanged it with a Sony Vaio of the same performance. They didn't even test it to see if there was a problem. But the guys behind the counter did say that they had seen some come back. I checked Compaq's Website and the 715 is not even offered anymore! They are coming out with the 717 which has the exact same specs as the 715... Needless to say, this laptop is a lemon and Compaq is trying to cover it up.

Three years and running fine,

I've had a Presario 700 laptop for three years now with minimal problems. I did have a problem with it not rebooting once during my first year with it, but my service plan with the store I bought it from took care of it with no cost or hassle to me. People with major complaints must have gotten bum units, but I've been very happy with mine. Keep in mind these things, though: 1) Compaq no longer makes the 700 line, since they have moved on to making newer lines, so support for it is now hard to find. 2) It comes with two 128 RAM chips but you can only replace *one* of them, the other is inaccessable. So the most you gan get out of it is 384 RAM. You only need the 256 for everyday use, but many new games are currently eating 256 all by themselves. If you have a game that needs 256 RAM by itself, it won't work on a laptop with only 256 to begin with. Trust me, I've tried. 3) It does like to overheat and then freeze up if you arent careful. This only happens to me when I am burning a lot of CD's in a row, and/or in the hot summer months. But I keep a little fan on my desk to blow air under the unit and that helps immensely. In short, I feel that if you NEED a laptop, buy something new and buy a good service plan. But my Presario 700 does still work fine at three years old, and I don't intend on replacing it soon.
