Amazon.com Product Description

Enjoying digital movies and music--especially personalized CDs--on a notebook PC can transform business travel into a civilized experience. Compaq is doing its part for road warriors by offering the Presario 910US, a notebook PC that delivers these goodies affordably.

The 910US’s 1.33 GHz AMD Athlon XP 1500+ processor provides solid performance across a wide range of productivity applications, games, and DVDs. A built-in combination DVD/CD-RW drive allows users to watch movies and listen to and create music CDs through the notebook’s integrated JBL Pro Performance Audio with Bass Reflex speakers.

The notebook’s 30 GB hard drive provides substantial storage for data and music downloads, while its 256 MB of memory--expandable to 1 GB--and 256 KB of on-chip L2 cache make it easy to run multiple applications smoothly. An ATI Radeon IGP integrated graphics card and 16 MB of shared video memory deliver resolution of up to 1,024 x 768 on the 910US’s integrated 14.1-inch TFT XGA display or up to 1,600 x 1,200 noninterlaced on an external monitor.

The 1.5-by-12.8-by-10.6-inch, 6.5-pound notebook includes an integrated 10/100Base-T Ethernet port and 56K V.92 PCI modem. Expansion slots include one Type I/II PC Card slot with support for a 32-bit CardBus. The 910US also includes two USB 1.1 ports, a parallel SPP/ECP interface (DB25 connector), a PS2 mouse or keyboard port, an RJ-45 Ethernet jack and RJ-11 modem jack, an S-video TV-out port, and an external VGA monitor port.

Installed software includes Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Microsoft Works 6.0, Microsoft Money 2001, Microsoft Encarta Online Deluxe Encyclopedia (one-year subscription), InterVideo WinDVD, and Norton AntiVirus 2002 on CD.

4.0 out of 5 stars The 905, avec CD burner., October 13, 2002

This review is from: Compaq Presario 910US Laptop (1.33 GHz Athlon XP 1500+, 256MB RAM, 30GB hard drive) (Personal Computers)
To begin with, it looks great. It's black & silver, sleek & reasonably svelte at 6.5 lbs. The HP genes are apparent in its design and the result is pleasing. The CPU is an adequate 1.33 Athalon XP; it's quite capable of most daily, non-graphics intense tasks, but not as good as an Intel P4. System memory also just adequate at 256 megs, though this can be doubled easily enough. The hard drive is a generous 30 gigs. A DVD/CD-R/W combination drive in included. All the Compaq's connections are in the right place, though missing is any USB 2.0 port. The video card is in line with the other components, with a 16 meg ATI card onboard driving a very sharp 14.1" active matrix display. (I am a fan of ATI graphics cards because they have been quite reliable over the long haul and because upgrading them from ATI's nice website is a snap) Overall, this is a good, basic machine made by a company that looks like it's here to stay.

This review is from: Compaq Presario 910US Laptop (1.33 GHz Athlon XP 1500+, 256MB RAM, 30GB hard drive) (Personal Computers)
Got this notebook a couple weeks ago from HP's Refurbished products. Paid less than $800 including delivery. This notebook has everything I need including a CD Burner, DVD Player, 1394 port, large/fast 30GB HD, and built in ethernet. The keyboard is great, especially the scroll device below the touchpad. As far as the CTRL key being in the wrong place, it's easily adjusted to - can't understand why anyone would make a big stink about it.

The performance seems to be very fast including digital picture editing. I haven't done any video editing yet so I can't comment on that. The display is more than adequate and seems very bright to me.

My only beef with it is all of the software Compaq preloads on it. Can't say that I wanted or use any of it.

For the $$$, I'd buy another in a heartbeat !

3.0 out of 5 stars 910US - Great value notebook with a bad keyboard design, December 30, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Compaq Presario 910US Laptop (1.33 GHz Athlon XP 1500+, 256MB RAM, 30GB hard drive) (Personal Computers)
This is a really solid low-end value notebook. Everything is perfect... EXCEPT the amazing fact that Compaq decided to place the rarely used "Fn" function key in the lower left-hand corner of the keyboard. This key is located exactly where the Ctrl key belongs. I absolutely guarantee that any experienced user will accidentally press this "Fn" key every single time that they attempt to press the Ctrl key. This is beyond frustrating. This design defect alone is sufficient reason to pay few hundred dollars more for some other brand.

The annoying "Fn" key is supplemented by an extra large Caps Lock key. Wow. yOU WILL BE TORMENTED BY ACCIDENTALLY PRESSING THIS CAPS LOCK KEY ON A REGULAR BASIS.

Other than these issues with the keyboard, this is probably the best notebook available for [the money]. Most people focus on the CPU speed when comparison shopping for notebooks. In reality, extra memory and hard disk space is the more beneficial element to be looking for. 256MB and 30 GB make this Presario superior to most competitors.

Tough call... A great notebook with a bad keyboard design.
