Cheap, But Effective,

I'm a huge fan of HP products. Not because they are a company that makes cutting edge products, but because they make affordable products that work for business minded people such as myself. I purchased this laptop for my sister after her other HP laptop (That cost me easily $800) was destroyed. I was a little skeptical about purchasing a laptop for half the price.
The laptop has some great attributes: -Great sturdy build quality -Aesthetically pleasing -Hardware functions great on the Windows 7 platform -Price -Runs all basic word processing software with ease The only bad things about the laptop is the new mousepad design that HP is starting to put on their laptops. The mouspad isn't accentuated in a recessed crevice, but rather its flush with the case and has the same texture as the case. Also the mouse pad only has one large rectangle button. I suppose with the adjustment of the sensitivity and some time spent getting mental memory of the notepad this can easily be conquered. Also, HP decided to put hot keys on the left of the keyboard. While I applaud the idea of this, it unfortunately means that the keyboards home row isn't quite exactly where you would expect it to be. This will inevitably result in you opening the calculator (that's one of hot keys on the left) while trying to hit the shift key. Overall the unit is great in quality with a few quirks here and there, but for a daily use laptop under $400 you can't beat this deal.

Almost perfect!,

Bought this computer primarily for the price. It is well built, runs cool, comfortable keyboard, decent sound and quite running. The screen image is of decent quality (but not the greatest). The mouse pad design is slick and modern but takes some getting used of it (no borders), however the pad buttons are not very good and cheap to the touch. Also there is no webcam (understandable considering the price), but it is also missing a card reader which I didn't know about it until I looked for it.The dvd player is also flimsy and delicate, just treat it with care. Considering what I paid for it ($350 after rebates) I guess I can't complain. Overall: GOOD!

I purchased this laptop for my niece for her birthday. She is 11 and does not do anything too extensive in terms of applications so the hard drive and memory on this laptop are more than adequately meet her needs. Other than a few games she primarily uses it for homework (e.g., Word, PowerPoint, Excel). She has been using the laptop since July 2010, she really likes it and for her "simple" purposes it has worked perfectly. The size is perfect for her and while she normally keeps it on her desk it is light enough that she also brings it on long car rides to do homework or to watch movies. For the price/value it has been great and I do not think I would trust her with a laptop that cost much more than the price of this one.
Today she experienced the first problem with the laptop. While using Word it started "back slashing" for no apparent reason and it will not stop. Looking at the key board it does not appears as though the key is depressed at all and we even attempted to raise the key. Nothing has stopped the back slashing. We called Technical Support and they are shipping us a box so we can return it to HP and they say it is a 8 to 10 day turnaround to get the computer back. I do understand that with all computers (value and high end) there can be problems so for now I will continue to rate the computer based on our overall experience and not just on the key board issue we now have. What is important to me is that they are honoring their warranty with one call (because we all know sometimes it takes 2 or more calls to get a company to accept a return and that is very frustrating) and providing a free method to return it for repair. I will update this one we have it back. UPDATE: WE RECEIVED THE LAPTOP BACK AND EVERYTHING IS FINE. THE REPAIR WAS PAINLESS AND FREE. HP STOOD BEHIND THEIR PRODUCT, FIXED IT AND RETURNED IT WITHIN 2 WEEKS.

I have been looking on laptops for 3 months. to be honest i found lots of better laptops than this with lower rate on amazon but i always was skeptical so i didn't order. but i decided to order this one and i am really satisfied with it so far. the only thing wrong i noticed about this laptop is when i am shut down and start again the screen kind of has a few silver lines going through it but that's only for like 1 secs and only when i am restarting. there is nothing else wrong with this laptop. a must buy but if u have more money then get this same kind of laptop with webcam and s-video.

Nice design, nice big bright screen. Of course I didn't expect to run high end graphics. But when I open iTunes and scroll, the album covers get all "smeared" over one another, and in fact the song list doesn't get updated as a scroll. That's no good for 3 stars. I haven't seen this happen on any other computer. Please let me know if anyone else had the same problem.

Excellent value, better than most that cost twice as much,
This review is from: Compaq Presario CQ62-210US Laptop PC (Personal Computers)
I bought my Compaq Presario CQ62 about 6 months ago. It was advertised as a student or business computer, and it is exactly what the advertisement states, and a little more. I use this computer apprx 12 hours a day. Internet surfing, word and excell, and watching free internet TV. This is an extremely well built, sturdy, hassle free computer. To say I am pleased, is an understatement.
Before I bought this computer, I looked at 100's of models. Every other comp was at least $100 more with the same hardware and software. I was dubious, only because of past exp with other brands. But these are the same models that my sons school uses and that made me buy the comp. If a laptop can withstand a couple years of sticky fingered, heavy handed, elementary school children, well then my family shouldn't be too much of a problem... The first week I had the comp, my son dropped it when getting it out of the car. He stopped the fall by using his knee to "catch it" against the side of my car. He dropped it a couple more times with varying excuses; one scratch, that is barely noticeable was the only result. Normally, dribbling a comp, causes some issues; but this machine is solid. It takes apprx one minute, for my comp to load at startup; including, wifi (I have two different signals; cable at home and verizon at work, and no compatibility issues, at all), internet, desk top, icons, everything. In fact it loads faster than my $1200.00 previous laptop, my husband's $800.00 HP, and my 20 year old dinosaur desk top. The battery lasts forever. I use this comp with multiple applications, word, 5 plus websites up, and hulu running in the background, for 3 plus hours before noticing that the battery is getting low. Again, much better than more expensive brands. My son occasionally steals my comp to play runescape and hit the social sites. He loves my comp more than his completely overpriced gateway. (another comp that cost twice as much and does half as good as this one.) My cats love this comp also. They can't seem to keep their paws off of it. I have had to start closing the comp when I leave the room, or they rearrange all my word docs. Even though they enjoy walking and sitting on the keyboard, (and screen if they knock it over) they have not managed to break it. The mouse pad took a short time to get used to, (one day), and even though I thought I would hate it, found the 1 pc bar for left and right clicking, easy to use. It does not constrict your use in any way. It saves $ and works just as well, if not better, than two part right/left clickers. One of the issues I had with other laptops, is sound volume. The speakers on this comp are much louder than any other laptop I have ever used. I am not commenting on sound quality; though, I listen to my music and "hear" no problems. The only con I have, is not the fault of the machine. The mouse pad is touchy, but you can adjust that, and the curser will "jump" all over the place when you are using word. I have this same issue with any comp that has vista or to a lesser extent, windows 7, as the operating system. I have had to get used to turning the mouse pad off when using word. Overall, I am extremely pleased with the hardware and software on this comp. This is a solid, well built, well designed, computer. I am a little confused with some of the neg reviews because most of the problems the reviewers outline, are not a problem with the comp. Why would you give a comp advertised as a student or business comp a bad review when it doesn't play games like a $1000.00 gaming comp? This comp does exactly what it says it will do, and more.

My presario had its first meltdown a month after I bought it. HP only replaced the battery. Two months later an HP tech recommended that I reformat the hard drive. Thank God I have Carbonite!! Two months later the backlight gave out. My local computer doc says they see more Compaq laptops with problems than any others. Just don't go there!!!
