5.0 out of 5 stars Great Monitor, Great Value
Besides its cool looks, the Compaq MV740 offers great graphics and sound. The JBL speakers are crisp and they are easily adjusted. Picture quality is excellent; I have a DVD player and movies look as good as they do on a TV screen. The 17" screen (15.9: VIA) is perfect for most users; if you need a bigger screen, you're probably a graphic artist (and then you'd...

The 17" screen (15.9: VIA) is perfect for most users; if you need a bigger screen, you're probably a graphic artist (and then you'd have a Mac anyway!). I have the video cam attachment, which is a blast. You can send video messages with sound and still pictures as e-mail attachments. The software for the cam is easy to load and easy to figure out. You'll be sending mini movies the day you plug it in. All in all, a great mid-level monitor that will meet the needs of most home users.

5.0 out of 5 stars Impressive Product, April 27, 2003

This review is from: Compaq Presario MV740 Multimedia 17" CRT Monitor (Electronics)
Super-high resolution, surround-sound speaker quality! Fun, easy-to-use screen display controls. No-frills installation.

The JBL Platinum speakers deliver syphonic music as if you're in the orchestra hall. And the built-in microphones make PC-phone and PC-PC live voice chat communications a simple reality.

4.0 out of 5 stars Amazing monitor, beats any flat panel even in this day and age!, November 1, 2011
This review is from: Compaq Presario MV740 Multimedia 17" CRT Monitor (Electronics)
Pros:
* Comes with detachable speakers and a built-in microphone
* Speakers are very good quality
* Very good color fidelity and high contrast
* Multisync (displays any resolution as native resolution while barely degrading the sharpness of the image, all flat panel technologies lack this)
* Can be driven at 120 Hz (confirmed working at 640x480 and is confirmed to be out of monitor's range at 1024x768)
* Sub-millisecond response time
* Decent menu

Cons:
* Curved screen (creates geometrical distortion, but can be adjusted)
* Produces a lot of aliasing in games when running at 640x480
* High power consumption (not that I care)
* HUGE and pretty heavy too

I got this monitor from my cousin before she was about to throw it out. I wanted to run all my PC games at maximum settings at the lowest resolution I could with full screen. Sadly, my 22" 1080p LCD HDTV does not scale resolutions well like other flat panels and it has a much higher response time, and the speakers are terrible. When I got this monitor I was amazed at how clear the picture was. The color gamut and contrast ratio on this monitor blows my LCD out of the water. The monitor is much friendlier for older games and the sound quality is superior to that of my LCD's speakers. I will keep gaming on this monitor until the its end. I might even buy a flat screen CRT. CRT technology is old, but it has yet to be rivaled in versatility by any flat panel technology in existance.
