The Presario S5000nx Desktop is driven by a price-conscious Intel Celeron processor operating at 2.5 GHz - an adequately fast CPU but not nearly as capable or as forward-looking as Intel's flagship processor, the Pentium 4. Compaq has added the bare minimum of RAM memory - 128 MB (upgradeable to 1 GB) and an integrated Intel Extreme Graphics controller with just 32 MB of shared (not dedicated) video memory. As such, the system is not intended for 3-D games, 3-D graphics, multitasking, or even marginally demanding business applications.
To store and transfer your data, the Presario S5000nx Desktop is equipped with a smallish 40 GB hard disk, a convenient 3.5-inch diskette drive, and a CD-RW drive that supports CD burning and playing but no DVD operations. The system features a variety of connectivity options, including serial and parallel ports, a 56K V.90 flex modem for low-speed communication, a high-speed 10-Mbps/100-Mbps Ethernet network port for high-speed LAN and Internet access, and a half-dozen fast USB 2.0 ports for plug and play peripherals. Compaq has not included a FireWire port (normally used for fast data downloads from digital camcorders). Monitor and speakers are sold separately, thus allowing you to choose from the many options available today.

Compaq Presario S5000nx,

This review is from: Compaq Presario S5000NX Desktop PC (2.50-GHz Celeron, 128 MB RAM, 40 GB Hard Drive, CD-RW Drive) (Personal Computers)
This is a great machine for the price and I have had no problems with it so far. I upgraded the Ram to 256mb for a net cost of $40 over the purchase price...still a good deal! The Intergrated Intel graphics now uses up to 64mb of shared Ram rather than the 32mb when just 128mb Ram is installed. I picked this machine up at Radio Shack and mated it to a Samsung Syncmaster 753DF monitor. The support from Compaq is easy to access and the documentaion is clear. The machine does not ship with recovery disks..so I burnt my own following the instructions (6 disks) which took about 45 minutes. So what if it is not the best gaming machine around..that's what I have an X-box for! For my purposes, the S5000nx does the basics very well (WP, e-mail, I-net, tunes, burning, etc) at a hard to beat price.

This was supposed to be a new computer, however, when it arrived, the box said that it was refurbished. The modem did not work. The customer service was poor. Obtaining a return authorization was like pulling teeth. Other that that, everything was great!!! My recommendation -- do not buy from Compaq or Office Depot.
