Processor:
At the heart of any computer lies the CPU (or processor), a massive collection of miniature transistors that governs the speed and power of the entire unit. Some of today's notebooks are equipped with high-end CPU's on par with those found in top-of-the-line desktop PCs, while others are quick enough only for basic duties such as word processing, email and the like. The Presario V5005US is fitted with an AMD Mobile Sempron 3000+-. This is a comparatively new chip design from AMD that substantially ups the ante in the entry-level CPU market. Developed as a powerful budget CPU and supporting tomorrow's breed of 64-bit software, the Sempron is fairing well in early benchmark tests. The 3000+- designation and 1.8 GHz speed of this particular model puts it right in the middle of the Mobile Sempron roster, delivering adequate power for the majority of typical notebook tasks.
Memory:
Computers typically store information on their hard drive, but they also keep frequently and recently accessed data in Random Access Memory (RAM) for faster retrieval. More RAM means more efficient computing, superior multitasking and less strain on your hard drive. The Presario V5005US incorporates 512 megabytes of 333 MHz RAM, a satisfactory amount and adequate speed for this level of notebook and certainly enough to permit some multitasking. The unit supports memory upgrades to a whopping 2 GB (2048 MB).
Video:
CPU's are usually so busy doing basic calculations that they need help translating visual output, particularly 3D graphics, to the viewing screen. This is the duty of the graphics card (or graphics controller). A graphics controller with dedicated built-in video memory is preferable to one with shared video memory wherein the graphics controller borrows a portion of the all-important main system memory. The ATI Radeon Xpress 200M IGP inside the Presario V5005US is a common notebook 3D graphics controller, sporting 128 MB of shared, not dedicated, memory. When you put all the key pieces together, this notebook will efficiently display 2D and most 3D applications, but is definitely not a top-end gaming machine.
Display:
A widescreen display at this price point is not at all common, but the Presario V5005US is not a common budget machine. At 15.4 inches, the system's WXGA display is great for panoramic DVDs and a definite help for those who'd like to see more of their documents. Its 1280 by 800 top resolution is also an advantage when working with text-heavy applications.
Hard Disk:
The Presario V5005US features an 80 GB hard disk. This was considered a huge notebook hard drive even a couple of years ago, but now is merely average. Still, it's plenty big enough for anyone who wants to set up a library of multimedia files or keep a load of space-hogging software, and certainly shouldn't restrict the average user.
Optical Drive:
This system boasts a versatile Double Layer DV D+/-R/RW and CD-RW combo drive that not only handles all standard blank media but also supports new double layer DVDs (twice the capacity of standard DVDs).
Audio:
The Presario V5005US offers microphone-in and headphone-out jacks and two integrated Altec Lansing-designed speakers.
Keyboard and Controls:
You'll control your notebook via a 101 key-compatible keyboard, a Touch Pad with an on/off button and dedicated vertical scroll up/down pad, and several one-touch hotkeys.
Connectivity and Expansion:
The Presario V5005US is equipped with today's essential connections. The unit features a 56K modem for low-speed dial-up Internet and email access, a 10/100BASE-T Ethernet LAN for high-speed corded network and Internet access, and 802.11b/g wireless technology with SpeedBooster support for cord-free communication via today's most popular standards, Wireless-B and Wireless-G. Other key amenities include a pair of USB 2.0 ports for plug and play devices such as external drives and digital cameras, an S-Video TV-out, and an ExpressCard/54 slot (the new and improved PC Card standard). The system does not include an IEEE 1394 FireWire port (commonly used for quick data uploads from digital camcorders), a card reader, Bluetooth or infrared technology, or composite audio/video ports.
Operating System and Software:
Compaq will pre-install copies of Microsoft's Windows XP Home Edition operating system, Microsoft's Works productivity package, Microsoft's Money financial suite, an assortment of trial edition applications, and several multimedia and communication utilities.
Dimensions and Weight:
At 6.6 lbs and 14.1 by 10.2 by 1.38 - 1.77 inches, the Presario V5005US is slightly under average size and therefore makes for a comfortable carry.
Power:
The Presario V5005US is powered by a 6-cell Lithium-Ion battery.

This review is from: Compaq Presario V5005US 15.4" Laptop (Mobile AMD Sempron Processor 3000+, 512 MB RAM, 80 GB Hard Drive, DVD+/-R/RW and CD-RW Combo Drive) (Personal Computers)
This is my first laptop, and so far I have had no problems with it. I use it for work, and it is really serving it's purpose well. I like the keyboard especially (I do a lot of typing). I looked at others in the same price range and this one just had a nicer "fit." Great laptop for the price!
