Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

Whether you're e-mailing family and friends, balancing your online checkbook, or listening to your digital music collection, Compaq's SR1320NX offers a versatile, strong base for your home computing needs. Focusing on affordability, the SR1330NX has room to grow with the ability to add up to 2 GB of RAM and a wide variety of peripherals via its seven USB 2.0 ports. It's also ready for your multimedia needs, with a dual layer DVD/CD burner and a multiformat memory card reader that's compatible with today's most popular digital camera formats. Other features include a massive 200 GB hard drive, 512 MB of installed RAM, and a 2.2 GHz AMD Athlon XP 3200+ processor.

The Basics

  • Hard Drive: Providing more than ample storage for all your multimedia and video editing needs, the installed 200 GB hard drive (7200 RPM) is one of the largest hard drive sizes available right out of the box.
  • Processor: While the 2.2 GHz speed of this AMD XP 3200+ processor sounds small in comparison to Intel processor, it gets more done per clock tick and is actually comparable to a 3.2 GHz Intel Pentium 4. It's suitable for the most demanding home computing needs for today--and tomorrow--and will ably handle high-end video editing and immersive 3D video gaming. It also features a 400 MHz front-side bus (FSB) and a 512 KB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance.)
  • Memory: The 512 MB of installed RAM (PC2700) is adequate for running office productivity and audio software, but you'll want to take advantage of the roomy 2 GB of total RAM capacity (2 x 1 GB) for such multimedia needs as video editing and immersive 3D gaming.
  • CD/DVD Drive: The SR1330NX features two optical drives: a 48x CD-ROM for reading CDs and a dual-layer, multi-format DVD writer with CD burning capabilities. Offering the latest in DVD writing technology, the DVD burner is compatible with both DVD+ and DVD- disc formats as well as dual-layer DVD+R discs, which can store up to 8.5 GB of data. It features 16x DVD+R, 8x DVD-R, 4x DVD+/-RW, 2.4x DVD+R DL, 16x DVD-ROM, 40x CDR, 24x CDRW, and 40x CD-ROM ROM speeds.
  • Keyboard & Mouse: This desktop PC comes with the Compaq Productivity keyboard and scroller mouse, both of which connect to the PS/2 ports on the back of the machine.
Graphics and Sound
The SR1330NX features audio and video cards that are integrated into the computer's main board. The sound card uses the AC'97 (Audio Codec '97) standard (configurable to 6 channels of audio). The video/graphics card has up to 64 MB of shared video memory. It is suitable for good range of gaming graphics and multimedia video playback, but might not stack up for ultra-realistic 3-D PC games.

Connectivity and Expansion Slots
For expansion, the SR1330NX has two 5.25-inch external bays (one available), one external 3.5-inch bay (one available) and one internal 3.5-inch bay (occupied), three PCI slots (two available), and one AGP slot (available). It comes with a built-in floppy drive and the following external connectors:

  • 7 USB 2.0 ports (3 in front, 4 in rear) for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
  • 1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
  • 1 parallel port for connecting older printers and scanners
  • 1 serial port for older peripherals such as early PDAs
  • 2 PS/2 ports for connecting keyboards and mice
  • 1 VGA monitor port
  • 1 microphone, 1 headphone
  • 1 line-out, and 1 line-in jack
  • 9-in-1 media card reader on the front, compatible with CompactFlash (Type I and II), MicroDrive, SmartMedia, Memory Stick/Memory Stick Pro, MultiMedia Card, Secure Digital, and XD Picture Card
It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems). It also has a hot-swappable bay for adding an optional optical drive or second battery.

Preloaded System and Software
This system comes with the Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 operating system with Advanced Security Technologies, which helps to reduce unwanted downloads and pop-ups while surfing the Web. It also comes preloaded with Microsoft Works (for working with word processing and spreadsheet documents), Symantec Norton Antivirus 2005 (with 60 days of LiveUpdate), Norton Personal Firewall 2004 (60-day security update subscription), Encarta Encyclopedia 2005, Adobe Photoshop Album, Quicken New User Edition 2005, Microsoft Money 2005, RecordNow, WinDVD Player, WinDVD Creator 2.5, iTunes, PC Doctor, and SpySubtract.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice value, good everyday computer., March 6, 2005

This review is from: Compaq SR1330NX Desktop PC (AMD Athlon XP 3200+ Processor, 512 MB RAM, 200 GB Hard Drive, Dbl Layer 16X DVD+/-RW/CD-RW Drive) (Personal Computers)
I bought this Compaq two weeks ago after my computer's motherboard died. I would say it's probably the best value for its price right now, because it has a 200 gig hard drive and 512 meg memory. The Athlon and bus aren't the latest in technology, but it should be adequate for most applications. The DVD plays well, without any skips like my previous computer had. I'm amazed at how quiet the fan is.

It's not perfect though. The onboard audio chip is surprisingly subpar compared to my previous motherboard's chip, especially since the large hard drive and front audio ports make it seem like it is geared for mp3 and other music files. You'll definitely need to get a sound card, unless you don't mind horrible sound. It doesn't have an AGP video card either, so gets the memory from the main memory. I just put in my old video card and bought a new sound card for it. There's only two total memory slots, 3 PCI slots, and one empty bay. I inserted my old hard drive in that bay, but I can't get to the other side to put another screw in. Also, there is no detailed documentation, just a 4th grade manual- you know, with large pictures.

So far, it's doing what it's supposed to. Hope this helps.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not too bad for the price..., April 4, 2005
This review is from: Compaq SR1330NX Desktop PC (AMD Athlon XP 3200+ Processor, 512 MB RAM, 200 GB Hard Drive, Dbl Layer 16X DVD+/-RW/CD-RW Drive) (Personal Computers)
I bought this computer (package deal at Best Buy) for my use at home. I am returning to school to finish my Bachelor's degree and it has everything I need. I agree that the graphics and sound card are slightly lacking, but I am not too much of a techno-wiz to worry about that stuff. I use it for my school work, reports, presentations, and listening to CDs. The computer is very quiet and pretty fast for what I have used it for. (...)

I don't like the fact that Microsoft Office is not incuded. You have a trial version on it, but you have to "convert" it within 60 days or it won't work anymore. Plus, the Virus Scan program is a trial version as well. Other than that, it is working great. Very good features and size (200GB hard drive is WAY more than I'll ever need) make it a good bargain for home use.
