The TC1000 is Compaq's first generation of the tablet pc. After spending a few hours with one, I quickly fell in love. If it weren't for the severe price tag, I would be walking around with one all day, scribbling happily.

The TC1000 is a convertible tablet PC. The keyboard swivels and tucks under, which converts the tablet from notebook pc to tablet pc mode (shown in the picture). You can write notes, draw, and annotate ebooks, pdfs, word documents, etc, with the included stylus pen.

Unlike the other so called tablet PC's, the TC1000 is the lightest tablet PC available. It is roughly the size of pad of paper and as thick as a novella. The battery life makes it usable for school or adequate in a medical practice setting. Hand written documents, email, etc., can be emailed and will appear just as it did on the tablet without modification-- Nice for sharing meeting minutes or notes with coworkers.

Unfortunately, after several days of quiet rationalization I still couldn't get over the sticker shock. Other negatives include a somewhat sparkly screen, slow response due to the underpowered 1Ghz transmeta processor, and no CDROM. Loading extra software will have to be done over the network or over a USB CDROM.

The second generation version (TC1100) has come out and is much better. Both versions are apparently being offered. While the TC1000 can be made to run faster by maxing out the memory, I would recommend paying the extra cash and purchasing the TC1100.

Minus one star because of the price tag.
