This book focuses on approaches to computer-assisted medicaldecision-making. A unique feature of the book is that a specificproblem in medical decision-making has been selected from theliterature, with each contributed chapter presenting a differentapproach to the solution of the same problem. Theoretical foundationsfor each approach are provided, followed by practicalapplication. Techniques include knowledge-based reasoning, neuralnetwork models, hybrid systems, reasoning with uncertainty, and fuzzylogic, among others. The goal is to supply the reader with a varietyof theoretical techniques whose practical implementation can beclearly understood through the example. Using a single, concreteexample to illustrate different theoretical approaches allows varioustechniques to be easily contrasted and permits the reader to determinewhich aspects are pertinent to specific types ofapplications. Although the methods are illustrated in a medicalproblem, they have wide applicability in numerous areas ofdecision-making.
