More About the Author

Award-winning journalist and author Michael Hodgson is constantly "seeking out the wilder side of a mountain..." in search of a good story or a ridiculously tough place to test gear. Frankly, his friends are amazed that he can still walk.

In addition to this website, Michael currently operates HI Endeavors Consulting, drawing upon his over 30 years of industry experience in the outdoor industry to provide solutions to businesses in need. As a former retailer, guide, outdoor education instructor, publisher, web developer, business developer, and business reporter, he is bring an extensive network of expert connections coupled with a business perspective that is objective, unique, trustworthy, unbiased, and insightful to help businesses with branding opportunities and challenges, customer service and training evaluation, product development strategy planning, business strategy planning, and employee / customer relations.

Until January 31, 2012, Michael served as the president of SNEWS®, a leading subscription-only newsletter serving the outdoor and fitness industries and was a founding partner in GearTrends® - www.GearTrends.com - established in 1999 as an information website for new products and trends in the outdoor, snow sport, fitness, paddling and bike markets -- merged with SNEWS (www.snewsnet.com) in 2002.

Michael started working, along with his wife, Therese Iknoian, with SNEWS founder Bob Woodward in 2000. Michael guided the transition of SNEWS from a print-only publication to a web-only publication in 2001, and then, along with his wife, acquired SNEWS in January 2002. Michael and Therese partnered with Gene Treacy in November 2002 to launch an expanded business with magazines and more, and by 2007 the company had grown its subscription base from 360 when the company was acquired to well over 5,000. On Dec. 21, 2007, Michael, Therese and Gene sold SNEWS to Active Interest Media.

One of Michael's other websites -- www.adventurenetwork.com - debuted in 1996 and was recognized in 1999 as a USA Today Hot Site, a Featured Expert award winner and a Golden Web award winner. Yet another site, www.totalfitnessnetwork.com, and operated in partnership with his wife, Therese, debuted in early-1999. Adventure Network® and Total Fitness Network were relaunched in 2011 as one website, now known as Adventure Network® + Total Fitness Network.

Michael served as the gear editor for Men's Health magazine from 1997 to 1999 and during that time was also the on-air talent covering gear and trends for Outside's Radio Network's nationally syndicated weekly show. Michael also worked as an editor for Outdoor Retailer magazine from 1990 to 1999 where he was instrumental in launching that magazine's website as well as covering the business of running websites, etailing and the Internet before the terms even became fashionable. While with Outdoor Retailer, he co-founded the Daily Exposure, the daily paper for Outdoor Retailer's two industry trade shows, where he served as editor for five years. Now known as the Outdoor Retailer Daily, these highly successful trade show dailies are now published by SNEWS, once again under Michael's direction. Michael has also worked as a part-time editor for Planet Outdoors from June 2000 to November 2000 and a content editor for Fogdog Sports from 1999 to early 2000.

Prior to his life as a journalist / author, Michael worked as the General Manager of Western Mountaineering -- a specialty retail shop and manufacturer of down sleeping bags -- and as an assistant store manager for Adventure 16, a nationally respected specialty outdoor retail chain in Southern California. While at Adventure 16, Michael founded and directed Adventure 16′s store-wide Wilderness Outings program where he also served as a guide.

Committed to serving others, Michael was a member of the Board of Directors of Big City Mountaineers from 2002 through 2010, leading the organization as the board president from 2008 to 2010. He has also served as a member of the Nevada County Sheriff's Search & Rescue team.

As a journalist, Michael's articles have appeared in Outside, Backpacker, Hooked on the Outdoors, Men's Journal, Adventure West, Field and Stream, Outdoor Life, The Christian Science Monitor and others. He has published 18 books on the outdoors which include the wildly popular No Shit There I Was series, the critically acclaimed Compass & Map Navigator, Facing The Extreme, and, most recently, Camping For Dummies.

5.0 out of 5 stars reads in one sitting, wanting to go out hiking!!, March 22, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Compass & Map Navigator (Paperback)
I've read the book in one sitting, turning maps and terrain over and over in my head. The author makes the information clear and concise. It is clear that he is an experienced hiker in all kinds of terrains and conditions: desert and winter environments. It (the book) is a no-nonsense what you need to know instruction set. If you need to know how to use, or even what to buy in a compass, then this is the book that puts it down on paper in a way that you remember when you are out on the trail.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good concise discussion on land navigation, October 9, 1997

This review is from: Compass & Map Navigator (Paperback)
Well written, well illustrated guide to general land navigation. Also teaches how-to navigate without a compass. Book includes a compass-on-a-card that can be carried in a wallet and used for survival situations. Excellent for beginners and intermmediate navigators. I liked the graphic illustrations and the illustrations of how to use a map with a compass. The only negative I found was the lack of mention that the magnetic declination changes each year. If you have an old map, the declination value can be off significantly.

4.0 out of 5 stars He knows navigation, and how to teach it, October 20, 2004
I know little about navigation, but I can tell when someone is knowledgable or not. And Hodgson is not only adept at navigating, he is equally competent at teaching these skills to others. I found that many of his tricks and tips are easily applied to many circumstances. In fact the only fault that I have with this book is that I was expecting the compass included in the book to be a capable as a backup, which it is not. Other than that, I believe that the book is very helpful and unless you are an expert navigator you should be able to find some usefulness.
