Book Description

0935652701 978-0935652703 July 1, 2004
In this groundbreaking work, author John Giannini offers an in-depth and often philosophical and autobiographical exploration of psychological type that seeks to reconcile type and archetype in Jung's original and subsequent works. Developing the larger implications of the functional couplings is one of Giannini's main objectives in Compass of the Soul. He posits that the couplings are the four archetypal modalities through which the Soul perceives and judges the outer and the inner worlds. These couplings, he writes, constitute the four directions of the type mandala, or, borrowing Jung's term, the Compass of the Soul.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

"This book...gives rich review of theory and integrates the approaches of both analysts and type practitioners who interpret and implement Jung's theory in different ways. No one else has done such a valuable work...Early in our correspondence Giannini wrote that he had three main agenda in mind in writing this book;(a)developing the original archetypal nature of the types, especially the couplings;(b)bringing the analysts and MBTI communities to a better understanding of each other; and (c)adding to type theory more of the richness of Jungian thought that is often overlooked in MBTI writings, e.g. dreams, imaginations, literature. I believe the book is on target with all three. Mary McCaulley, PhD and co-founder with Isabel Briggs Myers of CAPT.

This review is from: Compass of the Soul: Archetypal Guides to a Fuller Life (Paperback)
I'm surprised no one has reviewed this book. This book is truly awesome, and I don't give my praise lightly.

The only books I can think to compare it to are The Trickster and the Paranormal by George P. Hansen and The Culture of Make Believe by Derrick Jensen. I compare it to these books because it is also a very large and detailed book that analyzes our culture, and each of them is an intellectual feast.

Compass of the Soul focuses mainly on society, but the lense through which the author looks is Jungian personality typology. The author is both a Jungian analyst and a MBTI practitioner. If you want an overview of, Jung's view of personality and those who developed his ideas there is no better book than this. However, if you don't have some basic familiarity, it might take you a while to grasp his viewpoint. This book isn't meant to be an introductory work.

I should point out that this isn't just another book on Jung's ideas or on the MBTI. Hansen goes way beyond that. He analyzes our entire culture based on a very profound psychological understanding. Combine your reading of this book with the other two I mentioned and you'll have insight into our culture like few people possess.
