Book Description

March 2007
This book contains a collection of informal, short pieces, both theologically substantial and genuinely popular, aimed at helping us "get our bearings" in the life of the spirit today. These essays reveal the staleness and oppressive nature of many of our spiritual practices at a time when, more than ever, we need to stand back and let the fresh winds of the Spirit blow through our lives and surprise us.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for discussion group, June 26, 2007

This review is from: Compass and Stars (Paperback)
We are using this book for a discussion group. Very easy to read, but most of the chapters are quite relevant. Chapters are short, which is a plus when some people have not previously read them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rich spiritual insights, November 23, 2011

This review is from: Compass and Stars (Paperback)
The short pieces comprising this book were originally written as a column in the newspaper of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington (D.C.) The author, an Episcopal priest and former superior of an Anglican monastic order in Cambridge, Mass., has the rare ability to look deeply into topic, then explain it in clear, colorful language. Those on a spiritual path will find Smith a companionable guide. Clergy will want to mine the riches of this book for sermon material, because Smith speaks deep truths in a direct manner that can be easily understood by listeners. This is a wise and inspiring book.
