I have probably read thousands of books, including those on psychology. But if I were to list the half dozen which truly explained the world to me, this book would be on that list.
It is a hard book to read. Not because it is difficult to understand, but because of the emotional reactions you will experience as a result of the truths you will find in it. For example, after twenty years of wondering about the causes of my divorce, this book gave me the answer on the first page. The revelation was a relief, but it was also the key that unlocked the reasons for much of human tragedy when it comes to relationships. If you really want to understand human psychology, Robert Firestone is there for you. The premise of this great book is that in order to raise your own child compassionately, you must understand your own childhood, and the manner in which you were raised. For this reason, I found the title a misnomer, since much of it is about understanding yourself. It is extremely valuable to know however, that at the age when you experienced the most pain or abuse in your childhood, that is the age of your own child when you are likely to be the most abusive.
Anyone who cares about being a good parent, a good spouse or understanding the human race would be well advised to study this book like the Bible.
