Book Description

June 1, 2009
How can compassion, a trait hardwired into our nervous system and waiting to be awakened, transform our lives and the world at large? Marc Barasch provides up-to-the-minute research to timeless spiritual truths, and weaves a stirring, unforgettable story of the search for kindness in a world that clearly needs it. With unfailing curiosity, Barasch poses vital questions: What can we learn from exceptionally empathetic people? Can we increase our compassion quotient with practice? What if the great driving force of our evolution were actually "survival of the kindest?" He comes up with challenging, ultimately inspiring answers. With encounters as diverse as observations of compassion amongst bonobo chimpanzees, to the story of a man who forgives his daughters killer, to teenage Palestinian and Israeli girls trying to wage peace, Barasch blends hard science and popular culture with his own hip, engaging narrative style to create a smart, provocative argument that a simple shift in consciousness changes pretty much everything.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Praise for The Compassionate Life

"An argument for compassion that is balanced yet persuasive--and long overdue. This book ought to be a compulsory read for all."
--Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate

"Marc Barasch shares with the best science writers an ability to make you feel the excitement of discovery. His book will interest anyone who struggles to be kinder in a not-so-kind world."
--Washington Post

"Barasch uses humor and fine reporting...Rather than a whifty compendium of spiritual musings, The Compassionate Life builds upon relevant observations from surprising sources."
--People

5.0 out of 5 stars An extraordinary book that opens the heart, June 10, 2009
This review is from: The Compassionate Life: Walking the Path of Kindness (Paperback)
This is an extraordinary book - a must read for everyone at this most critical time. Not one for tears, I found myself crying, then laughing and always with a growing feeling of hope that we as humans can turn things around. Marc's message is simple, "Love each other, love the planet; love madly, with no fear, without restraint." Bravo.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning, June 18, 2011

Marc Ian Barasch's books are some of the most absorbing and exciting works of "spiritual journalism" you will find. With one foot in the realm of miracles and mythic stories of healing and compassion, and with the other firmly planted in the healthy skepticism of the Western scientific mind, Barasch weaves an always inspiring yet always believable story of our ultimate interconnection with all of life.

Barasch's vocabulary is glacially vast. He guides the reader with creative examples from the hilarious minutea of everyday life. He has wonderful, Sedaris-like humor, and a unique lyrical ear for the sound of words. Barasch is simply one of the greatest literary voices of our new century.

J Jennifer Matthews, author of "Radically Condensed Instructions for Being Just as You Are"
