This toner cartridge is an exceptional value and by far the cheapest of any other place.
The only problem I had is that the Toner light on my HL-2240 blinked on and off but was easily fixed by following these instructions.

Open the front cover of the Brother HL-2040 and leave open while completing the following steps:
1.) Turn the printer off.
2.) Hold the `go' button while turning the printer on. All panel lights should be on.
3.) Release the `go' button once all lights are off.
4.) Press the `go' button 2 times.
5.) Pause.
6.) Press the `go' button 5 times.
7.) The toner light should be off.
8.) The paper light should be on.
9.) Close cover. The ready light should be the only light on.
Once all steps are successfully completed your "low toner" light should be fixed.

THe HL_2270DW firmware has been designed NOT to work with non-oem cartridges. OEM cartridges contain a chip that defeats the copy count function in this printer, non-OEM cartridges lack this chip and because of this the machines copy count function determines whether or not the printer will print; after a certain number of copies it decides that it isw out of toner and refuses to print. Brother support will only give you the instructions to override the copy count function AFTER they have determined that you are using an OEM cartridge, therefore always save at least one OEM empty cartridge so you can give its model number to brother when they ask for it.
Follow the following set of instructions to override the copy count function:

The following steps to reset the toner sensor/copy counter.

- Open the front cover and leave open while completing the following steps.
- Turn the printer off.
- Hold the 'go' button (or "start' button) while turning the printer on. All panel lights should be on.
- Release the 'go' button (or "start' button).
- Press the 'go' button (or "start' button) 2 times.
- Pause. All panel lights should be on.
- Press the 'go' button (or "start' button) 5 times.
The toner light should be off. (error may be flashing)
The paper light should be on or flashing.
- Close cover. The ready light should be the only light on.

I bought two toner cartridges based on the good reviews. One review suggested to buy 2 in case one does not work and this was the only one mentioned toner not working. Very sadly both did not work for me. I was too trusting about the reviews so I didn't try the toner right away when received. I waited till the Brother TN450 was completely out (more than 3 months passed after I made the purchase). Therefore, I can't return or replace them because the seller only provided 30 day return policy. Luckily I found on Youtube how to refill the TN450. I followed the refill instruction and dumped the black powder from the non-working OEM one and filled the Brother one. It worked!! So I don't need to throw away the un-compatible ones. It is also cheaper to buy the "powder" and re-fill by myself.

Ok. I don't really care about using certified toners only because of, as the printer manufacturers argue, the possible shortening of the life of the printer. Regardless of the truth of that argument, it is a fact that printers are cheap and certified toners are expensive. So why not just buy another printer I saved on using cheaper toners.

That's why I gave it a go with this toner by PDS.
But it didn't work.

This might happened just to this one toner, and just me, as the general review score of this product is quite high.
Regardless, what happened to me was that after using the new toner for about a week, I began to see some smudges on the printed papers, so I pulled the toner out and found out that it's been leaking.
If the problem was just a somewhat 'cheap' looking, it would've been ok.
But, this thing just didn't do the very basic job it's supposed to do -- to make where it has to be black black and white white.
So now I'm going back to Brother's and going to stick to them.

I purchased a Brother printer because I'm in grad school and I have to print off a lot of notes/handouts/study guides/assignments, etc. I like laser printers because they're cheaper in the long run than inkjet, and they produce better quality printouts. Anyway, my printer came with the starter toner, but that ran out after a few weeks and so I decided to get this toner. I think I spent about $15 on a new cartridge as compared to $40+ for a Brother-certified toner cartridge.
For my purposes this works great. When I opened the new toner I noticed that there was a thin layer of ink on the outside so my hands got a little messy when I was putting it in. But now it's in and it's not that big of a deal - just wash your hands. The printing so far has been indistinguishable from the Brother cartridge that came with the original printer. The only thing I can say is that every once in a while there is a little extra marking on the page. The first few sheets had it, but after that it's really hard to notice. Right now the only thing is that it has a few very faint lines that print within the top 1/2" of the page (the margin - so you're not putting anything important in this space anyway). I'd like to emphasize that they are VERY faint, and more than likely you're only going to notice them if you're looking for them. So for a student who prints off a ton of stuff for school use, nothing ever gets in the way of my printouts or makes any distracting marks on the pages.
So unless you absolutely have to have perfect pages with no hints of imperfection, I would definitely recommend this. It prints great and is very affordable and even though it's not 100% perfect, 99% of people don't care or won't notice anyway (especially if it's just you using it).

Upon inserting cartridge, you get a low toner warning. The cartridge only lasted about 10 days at average 10 sheets printed/day

I have very satisfied with this replacement. The additional steps are easy to perform but there were no instructions included. Hopefully the steps below help you. I would buy this again.

This unit works correctly but not out of the box. I can see how this frustrates many of the reviewers but the actual unit does indeed work. The reason for the need to manually makes some changes is (purely speculative) because Brother also sells toner cartridges and they would rather take your $70 than have you go elsewhere.

Here are the steps that I had to perform in order to have this work correctly on a Brother HL-2270DW printer:

1) Power on printer (or leave it on if already on).

2) Make sure that the "flag gear" (the white gear with the squiggly arrow on the right-most part of the left side of the cartridge) is in the "new" position (approximately at 11 o'clock). The unit I received did not have this properly aligned. Make sure that the arrows on the gear and the arrows on the case match. The"starter" cartridge does not have this gear but a fixed black piece in place of it (with the same squiggly arrow but not movable). To re-align this you will need a phillips screw driver to take off the black case (2 screws). Reposition it and then screw back together.

3) Remove the old cartridge from the drum and attach the new one in its place.

4) Insert the drum and cartridge unit into the printer.

5) Access the web maintenance page of the printer to reset the toner status. This is available at the IP address of the printer in a web browser. Select "Printer Settings" and login with the credentials "admin/access" Scroll down to the bottom and change "Replace Toner" from "stop" to "continue". Submit changes. Please note that the toner light did not immediately reset but it did shut off several minutes after replacing.

This is now printing correctly and the quality of the prints is good. This cartridge is a heck of a deal for the money and I am ordering additional cartridge for family members. I can not vouch for the duty cycle/life of the cartridge yet as I have not yet exhausted the replacement but I am very satisfied with the money spent (and saved).

Will seek a replacement, just a warning, I see someone else had the same problem, needed to add to the sample size of the reviews.

Immediately upon installation my fax said that the toner was low. Within two days, the cartridge was completely out. Cheap item but you still don't even get what you pay for. This item is a rip off.

I bought this by mistake. thought i was buying the original manufacturer's toner cartridge then realized the price was way too cheap to be original. My printer stopped working when the original toner ran out. I could not make this cartridge work despite several attempts at the straight forward, easy installation. I went to staples and bought an original Brother toner cartridge. Installed it and it worked perfectly, immediately. The only good news is that Amazon processed the return flawlessly. I can't recommend this because if you are counting on the arrival of a replacement, you can't count on this product working.
