5.0 out of 5 stars Professional, authoritative and Biblically sound, October 15, 2004

Working as a psychologist in public psychiatry brings with it the demands of treating the more severe end of major mental illnesses as well as the limitations of exploring spiritual dimensions of client's experiences. In exploring the literature relating to Christianity's response to mental illness I've come across many poorly reserched or narrowminded conceptions of major mental illness, accurate psychiatric assessment and treatment, spiritual conceptualisations of presenting problems, spiritual diagnoses combining knowledge from psychiatry and Biblical examples and fomrulating appropriate treatment plans. This book offers extremely well thought out material on the foundations of Christianity's role in viewing mental illness, the importance of utilising God's given knowledge from psychiatry and related fields, as well as the ultimate provision of God's intervention in helping those with a mental illness. Highly recomended for people with training in psychiatry and those exploring the integration between psychiatry and Christianity.

I purchased this book for a college class but I've recommended it to friends not in school. It's full of good information. I was convicted, challenged, and excited by reading. The editrs did a great job.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Resource, January 31, 2007
This review is from: Competent Christian Counseling, Volume One: Foundations and Practice of Compassionate Soul Care (Hardcover)
Competent Christian Couseling is an excellent resource book for biblical counselors of all types, be it: pastors, lay counselors, clinical, or private sector counselors. However, the book reads more like a compilation of articles and insights that a person can find in Psychology Today, or other counseling magazines. Although it is put together nicely, and it can be very useful in practical application, I feel it does not reach the potential that it can reach.

Students will find this work helpful in their pursuit of a counseling major, although, they may not refer to it much once they are in their own practice.

Overall, the work is good and worth the money and study, but it was not what I had expected.
