Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 6-9-Straightforward text framed in wide margins discusses history, whether or not the activity is a sport, being on a team, and how competitions are organized. Sidebars address "What Are the Judges Looking For?" "The Mental Factor," and "What about the Boys?" Abundant photographs, mainly in color, some of them full page, show cheerleaders at various stages of their routines, or simply posing. Information on cheers, choreography, and formations is not included. An easy-to-read overview, presented in an attractive, glitzy format.

From Booklist

Reviewed with Craig Peters' Chants, Cheers, and Jumps.

Gr. 5-8. A series on cheerleading? The Let's Go Team: Cheer, Dance, March series does cover everything from marching bands to cheerleading techniques to dance teams. The slim books, a sampling of titles in the 12-volume set, could easily have been combined into fewer volumes, but the material will definitely be of interest to the legion of youth who want to cheerlead or are already involved. Chants gives a brief history of cheerleading calls and delineates the difference between the short chants and the cheers performed when the ball is not in play. The book is full of instructions for hand motions and jumps, though without illustrations, they aren't very helpful. Better are the tips on such things as maximizing jump height. Competitive Cheerleading offers an overview of this new aspect of cheerleading and details the "competitive landscape." The texts are written, of course, in a peppy tone, and the interesting sidebars, such as the one dealing with the "Mental Factor," add value. The color photographs are crisp, but, not surprisingly, rather similar. A glossary, Internet resources, and a brief bibliography are appended. Ilene Cooper
