Book Description

July 11, 2003
The ability to read, play and make a convincing, consistent groove in a sixteenth note rhythm is one of the more formidable challenges facing a contemporary rhythm section player. This book attempts to address that challenge by supplying chord progressions with different syncopated rhythmic patterns. Practice of these exercises will lead to an understanding of the style, and ability to execute the rhythms common to funk. The student should strive to maintain rhythmic precision throughout each exercise, and after gaining control should compose their own comping patterns. The examples contained in this book use mostly a one measure funk pattern but in the real world it is more common to find 2 or 4 measure patterns. In a attempt to keep this book simpler I have used shorter but less common patterns which can be found in funk music.

For intermediate workaholics, or advanced students. Comping Styles for Guitar Volume 2 Funk is a collection of 36 different progressions that are presented in funk style, using the chord progressions found in the Chord Workbook for Guitar Volume One. Includes a CD which gives you these progressions in a trio setting of Guitar, Bass and Drums; a crucial learning tool for interacting with a rhythm section. All examples are presented in regular staff notation. This is a highly challenging but rewarding workout.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

We are very excited about Mr. Arnold's Comping styles series. These progressions are based on his best selling Chord Workbook for Guitar Volume One ISBN: 0-9648632-1-9. Mr. Arnold has culled from his many years of teaching both privately and on the university level, and provided the student with methods that prepare them for professional careers in music. The serious student will find the books to be a real workout in mastering and understanding the contemporary style of funk.

From the Author

This book addresses a common problem I have found with guitar students. The ability to groove and to play styles based on a sixteenth note pulse is usually very weak. Also students ability to read sixteenth note rhythms is spotty at best. This book takes the chord progressions found in Chord Workbook for Guitar Volume One and presents them in a funk style. The style I use in this book is sightly different from say your James Brown Band sort of funky guitar. This style incorporates playing both the bass and the chord simultanously. Though this is a little harder to coorindate at first, it gives the guitarist a firm foundation in understanding their relationship to the bass line but also gives the guitarist a style that can be used in duet situtations where you have no bass player and you want to create a funk feel. All examples are presented in regular staff notation which prepares the serious guitarist for reading funk rhythms. It is recommended that you also work through the Rhythms Volume 2 as a companion book to the Comping Styles Volume 2 this will help to build your recognition of sixteenth note rhythms and you also can use the audio files found on the muse-eek website to check you accuracy.
