5.0 out of 5 stars Another Terrific Weird Al Spoof
Even though this video is now 15 years old, the comedy and music are fresh. Our family really enjoyed it. We did not see a problem with the fact that Al recorded this before he had attained the fame and stature he has now. The video was simply meant to be a video parody of other dumb TV biographies. 1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible, not funny at all
There is really nothing to say about it. Al is terrible and making mockery of music. If he wants to make funny songs, then let him think of his own stuff and not just copy someone else.

Even though this video is now 15 years old, the comedy and music are fresh. Our family really enjoyed it. We did not see a problem with the fact that Al recorded this before he had attained the fame and stature he has now. The video was simply meant to be a video parody of other dumb TV biographies. He did as well with this as he does with his musical parodies. It was interesting to watch him and his band play in 85 and compare the performances with current shows (such as the live concert video from San Rafael in 99). They are more mature, more polished, less adolescent now. One last comment: as a mom, I appreciated that we could watch this as a family: no foul language or objectionable scenes. Typical of Weird Al!

4.0 out of 5 stars A must-have for any "Weird Al" fan!, October 12, 1999

This review is from: Compleat Al [VHS] (VHS Tape)
"The Compleat Al" is a bit slow at times -- I would've liked to have seen more "Al TV" clips and maybe some "genuine" concert footage. But overall, this video is a must-see! Highlights: "State of Shock," "I Don't Wanna Do My Laundry," Al's Jimi Hendrix impersonation, and all the videos, namely "Dare to be Stupid." Don't miss it if you can!

4.0 out of 5 stars Lacking in some places, but a MUST for all Al fans!, November 4, 2000

This rockumentary spoof also contains eight of Al's music videos (Which, at the time this movie was made, were the only music videos he had done). This was also made while Al was at one of his many career peaks. Originally a Showtime special, this movie is an almost-true account of Al's life. Even the FBI warning at the beginning is a spoof! There are spots where this one tends to drag...at the time, Al didn't direct himself yet. However, there are some very memorable parts to this video, especially the AlTV section, which shows several of his skits from the MTV specials that had been made at the time. The music videos are also quite good. This is still a must for any Al fan, but not up to par with Weird Al's more recent efforts.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Amazing and almost true story of a rock and roll legend, January 20, 2001

This movie was funny, informative, and fun to watch. This mockumentary from 1985 summarizes Weird Al's career up to that date. It also includes Al's first eight videos. Oh, and by the way, while it's summarizing his life, it's also making jokes and making Weird Al's life funny... This is a must for any Weird Al fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars It kills me., October 7, 1999
This review is from: Compleat Al [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I can't believe that someone would not give this movie a five star review. This is the product of a comedic genius. I laughed all the way through it, but I think it was the kiwi that killed me.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Video for Al Fans Everywhere, December 28, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Compleat Al [VHS] (VHS Tape)
If you wanted to know more about Weird Al, this is a great video to own. Some of it is a bit fictionalized - he's a parody artist after all. Great moments include the interviews with his parents (they are the real parents, too), the music videos for Dare To Be Stupid, Eat It, and others, and the scene where he's rushing to an autograph signing. Have fun with it, it's worth the price.

4.0 out of 5 stars An interesting yet comical insight into Al's earlier years., January 4, 1999
This review is from: Compleat Al [VHS] (VHS Tape)
It was a very good video overall; it has a lot of great comedy. It appears, however, that at times during the video he stretches for things to be funny about. Part of this, though, could be because of the age of the video. Just watch it. It's really hard to find!

5.0 out of 5 stars Al's a talented comedian, musician, filmmaker...., January 20, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Compleat Al [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This video shows how Al is capable of using all sorts of media for comedic effect. Folks should realize that Al is a comedian, not just a musician. Don't underestimate his talent from the few parodies you might have heard.

Al not only writes original songs (about 50% of each album) but also has a had a feature film, a children's TV show, and has directed music videos for the Black Crowes and the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion (and ... ugh.... Hanson -- I can forgive him for it, I guess).

I grew up listening to Weird Al because of my dad. He had this movie when it first came out. It's amazing, funny, and just all around great. I'd highly recommend getting this movie. It's so worth it. The Michael Jackson part would always scare us when we were little. Man this is such a great movie.
