Made a new friend on a conference field trip. He is an avid outdoorsman. I am familiar with the book, ordered it and had it delievered to him, directly, as a surprise. He was very pleased. The funniest part of the story is the shipping fee was nearly 5 times the cost of the book. I send my friend a second book by the same author. Thank you.

Most new fly-fishermen (or fishers) haven't heard of Al McClane, so: He was the fishing editor of Field & Stream in the '60s and '70s, and an author of many books about fish, fishing, and cooking them. Well-educated bon-vivant type, humble, plain-spoken, super fisherman, and as good a writer as the wide field of fly-fishing has produced. He died many years ago, which is why you may not have heard of him.
One essay in this book, The Case For the Flea Rod, is the best essay I've read on any topic; and all by itself is worth the price of the book. No photos. No illustrations. Good writing, instructional, entertaining...and never out of date. |
