Practical Acupuncture and Moxibustion: The Basic Principle of Acupuncture Treatment, The Needles, Preparations and Moxibustion, The Classification and Selection of Acupuncture Points, and The Location and Measurement of Acupuncture Points

Auricular Diagnosis and Treatment of Common Diseases with Auricular Therapy: Auricular diagnosis is a supplementary diagnostic method of examining the external ear according to the basic theory of TCM and anatomical projection. Any disorder of the body may result in corresponding appearance on the auricle. The purpose of auricular diagnosis is to find various positive reflecting indications, such as color change, sensitive points, substantial mass and electrical resistance changes occurring on any part of the ear's surface. These changes help identify the disease's location and nature. Nearly 100 common diseases treated with auricular therapy including: Acne, Appendicitis, Bronchial Asthma, Bronchitis, Cataract, Coronary Heart Disease, Diabetes Mellitus, Epilepsy, Female Infertility, Gastric and Duodenal Ulcers, Glaucoma, Headache, Hypertension, Insomnia, Menopause Syndrome, Migraine, Pneumonia, Psoriasis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Simple Obesity, Smoking Habit, Sprain and Contusion, The Common Cold, Tinnitus, Tonsillitis, Ulcerative Colitis, Ureteral Stones, Uterine Bleeding, Whooping Cough, and much more.

Applied Accupuncture: More than 100 kinds of disease in over 200 cases are detailed, including: Medicine, Surgery, Gynecology, Pediatrics, Ophthalmology, Otozhinolarynology and Dermatology. The description of each disease involves clinical manifestations, treatments and remarks. Clinical manifestation: the chief clinical symptoms and signs. Treatment: the prescription of acupuncture points, acupuncture manipulations, and some clinical cases. Remarks: selecting points and manipulations according to the clinical feature, brief introduction of some clinical experiences and some recent important advances in acupuncture. All of the diseases presented are named with the terms of modern medicine and, for the sake of contrast, Chinese medical traditional terms are also given in the remark. The last section is the concept of Bu (reforcing) and Xie (reducing) and their manipulation methods. This is intended to provide a reference for the medical workers in their clinical practice and may also help to broaden patients' understanding.

534 Clinical Research Studies: The purpose, methods used and results of clinical research is detailed for hundreds of medical problems. Requires Windows and CD-ROM drive.

From the Publisher

Carol Dunn, President of Hopkins Technology (publisher of this product) was used as the acupuncture subject in the video. The filming of both videos took all day and into the evening. It was an interesting experience, since Carol had never had acupuncture before.

The Principles of Selecting Points: The effect of acupuncture treatment does not only relate to the method of stimulation, but also closely to correctly identifying the point of stimulation. Generally different acupuncture points possess different indications. So the correct selection of acupuncture points directly acts upon the therapeutic effect and has very important clinical significance. It is said in Neijing: "Where the channels and collaterals pass by, there would be the indications of treatment for the associated diseases and symptoms." The basic principle is to select points according to the course of the channel, the distribution of points, and their indications. In clinical practice there are three ways for selecting points: local selection, distal selection and symptomatic selection.

Local Selection: This method selects the points on the disease location or near the affected site. For example, Zhongwan (Ren 12) is chosen to treat gastric pain; Quchi (L.I. 11) and Shousanli (L.I. 10) to treat elbow pain; Xiyan (Extra) and Yanglingquan (G.B. 34) are used to treat knee joint pain; Yangchi (S.J. 4) and Waiguan (S.J. 5) for wrist pain; Xiaguan (St. 7) and Jiache (St. 6) for toothache; Jingming (U.B. 1) and Sibai (St. 2) to treat eye diseases; Tinggong (S.I. 19) and Yifeng (S.J. 17) to treat deafness; Yingxiang (L.I. 20) and Yintang (Extra) for nose troubles; Tianshu (St. 25) and Daheng (Sp. 15) are selected for abdominal pain; etc.

Distal Selection: Points which are distal to the diseased area are selected according to the course of the channels. For instance, Zusanli (St. 36) is chosen to treat abdominal pain; Yanglingquan (G.B. 34) to treat hypochondriac pain; Hegu (L.I. 4) is used for toothache; Houxi (S.I. 3) for neck pain; Taichong (Liv. 3) for vertex headache; Shaoshang (Lu. 11) for sore throat; etc.

Symptomatic Selection: The selection of local and distal points are determined by the distance from point to the diseased area. Generally any illness or pain must be manifested by local pathological symptom or sign. As for some general diseases, or the patients without local pathological changes, points should be selected according to the symptom-complex of the disease. For example, Geshu (U.B. 17) is a specific point for the general condition of blood diseases; Shanzhong (Ren 17) for the general condition of Qi problems; Taiyuan (Lu. 9) for vessel diseases; Yanglingquan (G.B. 34) for disorders of tendons; Dashu (U.B. 11) for problems of marrow; Zhangmen (Liv. 13) for diseases of Zang organs; Zhongwan (Ren 12) for disorders of Fu organs. These points have close relations with the disorders of Qi, blood, tendon, vessel, bone, marrow, Zang and Fu organs, so any disease or symptom of these eight aspects should be treated by the above corresponding points.

In addition, clinical experiences have proved that some points have a very good effect on certain kinds of diseases. But they cannot be selected according to the above-mentioned three principles. They are named as empirical points. Different doctors may have their own experienced points. For example, Xiaguan (St. 7) can be used for heel pain; Quchi (L.I. 11) for knee joints pain; Yangchi (S.J. 4) for ankle pain; etc. The above methods of selecting points may be used separately or in combination.

3.0 out of 5 stars A good reference guide, January 25, 2001
This review is from: Complete Acupuncture (Alternative Health Series) (CD-ROM)
The complete acupuncture cd-rom is not for the beginner. The acupuncture demonstration on video was interesting. It showed how to insert the needles and how moxibustion is used. The talk on acupuncture answered basic questions about acupuncture, such as, Is it safe? How does it work? How often do you have to be treated for a symptom? The CD teaches you what needles are used, how to insert them, how to use moxibustion, possible accidents you might need to be aware of and more but it explains each subject only briefly. It sections off all the channels of the body and explains where they are in text format which I feel for a beginner is too hard to understand. It would have helped if they gave you the point combinations for a particular condition and showed a picture with the points being used. Also, the diagrams of the bodies with the points shown on them was a bit blurry. On the plus side, the CD does offer 534 acupuncture studies to research. It also contains a handbook for ear acupuncture on the CD, giving you points for many conditions. All in all, it trys to cover everything you need to know about acupuncture, but covers it only briefly. It is a good reference CD, but I need to buy another book to have a more thorough understanding of all the points.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Complete Acupuncture (Alternative Health Series) (CD-ROM)
Worst purchase ever as the product is very outdated to operate on newer pc's. Version is of an unusual format not read by O/S for windows xp or windows 7.
Would certainly not have spent the money if I knew the format was old and outdated. A rip-off and I will not purchase items like this again.
