Biography

Nina Simone was born Eunice Wayman on February 21st 1933, in Tryon, South Carolina. She is, for many, the ultimate jazz/blues diva. Few know however, that Ms. Simone holds a doctorate in music, yet was once refused admission to the legendary Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, an event that has forever marked her life. An intense live performer, Nina Simone's shows are legendary, ... Read more in Amazon's Nina Simone Store

Every album on The Complete RCA Albums Collection is interesting and worth hearing at least once no matter where one stands on Nina Simone. Whether a person needs to own all of these albums depends on how much of a fan you are. Certainly, "Nina Simone Sings the Blues," the first album on this set is an undisputed classic. However, the other albums are of varying quality, though, in my opinion, the live sets are the best. Nina Simone's voice, though, was on the decline after 1969 so this is not the place to start listening to Nina Simone (that would be either her first Colpix albums or the excellent Phillips set "Four Women).

The biggest caveat about this box set is that the order of the songs on each CD has been changed from the track listing on the LPs. Since there are no individual liner notes for any of these albums, there appears to be no good reason for this. Additionally, there are a number of bonus singles and live tracks that have been interspersed throughout the albums. I, for one, am happy to have these songs, but the way they have been added compromises the integrity of the original albums. I wish they would have kept the original track listing and added these songs at the end.

As far as the albums go, here are my thoughts:

"Nina Simone Sings the Blues" (5 out of 5 stars) -- This is an essential set for collectors as well as the casual fan. Simone is in fine voice throughout and the quality of the songs is outstanding with a fine balance of classic blues songs ("I Want a Little Sugar in My Bowl") and protest songs ("Backlash Blues," which was written by Simone and Langston Hughes).

"Silk and Soul" (3 1/2 out of 5 stars) -- Too much silk and not enough soul.

This set is an incredible value. It includes all nine original RCA Victor albums, and adds 35 bonus tracks, including additional songs or session material from each time period on each of the 9 CDs. The booklet gives details on all the sessions and sources. The set is also remastered.

The 35 bonus tracks collect together all of the special rarities that have ever been placed on an RCA/BMG collector's edition, or other compilations.

Music critics might debate which period of Nina Simone's recordings were the best, but the RCA period is certainly essential Nina.

If you get this set, you will have all of the other Nina Simone RCA CDs and RCA compilations in one small package, with mini-LP carboard sleeves showing the vinyl-LP covers.

Get it while you can!

I never liked Jazz as a child but slowly my wife and I have been drawn in with some songs we have heard here and there. Strangely be both love Nina Simone so much the first songs we played for our new baby were hers. We did not say anything to each other before hand, be just played two songs. "Feeling Good" for me because I want want him to have confidence and my wife played him "Sinner Man" because she wants him to be crafty I think. Anyway, after listening to and reading about Jazz, Soul and Nina I have learned that Jazz gave birth to most of what we listen to now and much of it is amazing. That being said you would be a fool not to have some of Nina's work in your library. Seriously. You would have to be crazy. She is like so Amazing that not having some of her music would be like horrible. I don't want to even think about it.

Birds flying high, you know what I mean.
