Book Description

What could be worse than letting billions die? In the future, be careful what you wish for. As the Weather Wars threaten to consume the planet, Dr. Patricia Killiam is in a desperate race against the clock to avert disaster by giving everyone everything they've ever wanted. The question is whether she's unwittingly saving the world, only to cast it towards an even worse fate as humanity hurtles across the brink of forever in a world teetering on the brink of post-humanism and eco-Armageddon.

"So great, I wish I'd come up with it myself...the Atopia series is one of those that will stick with me for the rest of my life." - HUGH HOWEYauthor of Wool.

5.0 out of 5 stars Real Sci-Fi August 9, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I would go into detail but you guys really need to not know anything beforehand that will tip you off to what is going on... it wouldn't be as much fun, a great read yes, but not all it should be! So I am going spoiler free... Also, just as a side note, if you think you know what is going on, you don't...

Atopia is about a free-state (not unlike the underwater setting of Rapture of the Bio-Shock gaming franchise) in which Science and Technology are the way, the breakthroughs are great, the living is perfect.

You want a holiday from work? Why not, Wake up in Australia, go to Paris to eat breakfast, see the sights of London while you read the news and still have time to get the kids off to school, grab a coffee and get to work at 9.

Want to know if you're ready for kids? Got that covered too, how does a virtual child sound?

Ever get sick of the boss piling on the work and can't find enough time for the family? Heh, that's nothing, how would you like to be in ten places at once!

This and more is waiting in the floating world of tomorrow in Atopia.

Atopia is the land of the free thinking and high tech lifestyle we all wish we had, beautiful, practical and smart. But it has its dark side, its thorns, and they are big enough to tear the world to shreds.

Atopia is a pure sci-fi in the vein of the great classics such as "Do androids dream of Electronic Sheep" and "Neuromancer"
It is pure hard-core, no crap, unadulterated science fiction that any sci-fi fan should be reading right now...

Matthew Mather has created something few can, a world that would be good as a film or game, if you liked tec-wars, you will love this, if you liked Blade Runner, this is your book, if you want something that takes you in, bashes you and throws you out, this is what you want. If you want something that explains everything to you in simple words, that coddles you or plays to the stereotypes to make the authors life easier or uses the latest fad to get you excited... well, you can leave, come back any time, you're always welcome here in the real world...

The way this story is presented, in its parts, is refreshing, it's been done before but it can hardly be pulled off, Matt does it and does it perfectly, just enough crack to keep you going but not enough so that you feel content with waiting a little while longer. In its collected form it will steal your life... make sure you don't have a presentation or assignment due the next day, you will fall asleep through it...

So in short, settle down, get comfortable (You will be in the same spot for a while...) and make sure you feed the kids/cat/dog/goldfish/yourself tell your other half that they can go out drinking/hanging with the girls and get a babysitter if applicable... Also, make sure your e-reader is fully charged, you don't want what happened to me happen to you... (Good bit and the iPad goes flat... do you know how long those things take to restart?) you are going to want to be distraction free.

Its going to be a long bumpy thrill ride that will leave you begging for more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great hard scifi in the virtual world August 9, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Atopia is the story of people caught up in a world of nanotech and virtual reality in which anything is possible. Reminiscent of the stories of John Brunner (Stand on Zanzibar and The Sheep Look Up), who won the Hugo for his look at futures where everything seems to work well, but things are quickly going to hell, Mather does a great job of transporting the reader into a world of everyday virtual reality. The characters take everything at face value, while the reader is left to wonder at the complete insanity of this strange world, much as people from the 19th Century would look at our world. The people seamlessly link with computers, giving them the ability to split parts of their personalities (splinters) off in order to be more than one place at a time, and multitask to an extreme. Some carry this beyond the extreme, and don't have enough central personality left to function as real people. Others pursue the potential of living in fantasy, or rent their own exploits out to audiences who pay for the privilege of being a champion surfer, or at least looking through the senses of one.
The characters are very memorable, and each book in the series is written from the viewpoint of one of the main characters. There is the ex-military man who is in charge of security at the independent nation of Atlantis, the floating city which is the test bed for the new technologies. The stoned surfer who rents out his experiences to those without the skill or the nerve to do them on their own. The scientist who developed many of the techniques of the virtual world, and sees the premature release of them by a greedy corporation as a looming catastrophe. The assistant security chief, a man with a dark secret which spells disaster for the city. And the publicist who tries the system in the real world, and is cut off from it, becoming out of touch with everyone around her. All is set in a background world in which nations strike at each other through plausibly deniable weather events, and everything is on the edge of a major collapse that could lead to the death of billions.
I found Atopia to be a fascinating and entertaining series in which the author immersed me into another world. I highly recommend Matthew Mather's series of Novellas. Get them while they're hot. You won't regret the minor investment. Definite five stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mesmerizing August 14, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Hugh Howey highly recommended this book so I decided to grab a copy. I must admit coming into this I wasn't expecting much. But, I have literally been in awe of this book. I haven't been able to put this down since I started. Each book is from the view point of a different character setup as sidequels. (essentially each story happening at the same time) The world that Matthew Mather has created seems so real. In so many ways I can see society moving in this direction, and he brings it to reality on the page. The way he writes makes the reader somehow feel like they are experiencing this unique world where reality and virtual reality meld, change and shape human interaction at the core.

When I score a book I always reserve a 5 star rating for that rare book that really is unique, inspiring, or so well written that I can't imagine it being done any better. Most books that I really, really enjoy get a 4 star rating from me. I rarely give out 5 stars. I have given The Atopia Chronicles 5 Stars. This is a remarkable collection of books that are truly unique and written in a way that truly captures the reader and pulls them into a world where people use virtual reality to impact nearly every aspect of their lives.

Why the weird font?
This only seems to be happening with the Kindle Touch i've heard. Works great on my Kindle Keyboard. With the Touch you should be able to touch the screen in the middle with your fingers and reduce or increase the font size instead of changing the entire font level. Hope this helps.
