Not for the casual listener and not the best installment of the series, but essential music for any serious fan of reggae or of Bob Marley. Many feel that the Wailers' Jamaican recordings from the late sixties and very early seventies, especially those produced by Lee Scratch Perry, were their best. The first part of this collection has some of these cuts (see part two for the rest of them). Also included are some rawer run-throughs of tunes that would later show up in more refined and listener-friendly versions on Marley's Island Records releases, and some wonderful things you will only find here. There are also some missteps. A good chunk of this set merely makes for interesting historical listening, but what is good here is as good as anything Marley ever recorded.

This whole JAD series is really great, seriously some of the best Bob recordings out there. Not because of the high-fidelity or "hits" either - these are the original recordings, and are much much better than the hollywood-ized late 70's remakes (though those had their own appeal as well). These recordings have been digitally cleaned up but nothing has been changed, no remixing or additional production added - this the real stuff, straight from the original creative impulses, un-diluted. I would say the 3-cd box of Part II in this series is better, but all 3 parts are excellent. This is sooo much better than what 99% of other recorded musicians will ever leave behind for us.

I think that this cd really shows and appreciates how good bob marley was. the song selections are great 5 stars!

The two cds in this collection are wonderful and I was amazed with what I heard. If you have a friend who has never heard of Bob Marley before, these cds arent the best ones to buy for that friend (I recommend Legend), but if you are a devoted or obsessed fan of Bob's (like myself), then these cds are total pleasers!! I am constantly trying to find Bob's rare songs, usually when I do they are demos that you can hardly enjoy, but like I said, these cds were total pleasers to me. Its filled with familiar songs and new ones. I recommend the whole JAD collection.

This set was absolutely UNBELIEVABLE to me when i first heard it. Thick, sticky beats that make you sweat just thinking about 'em. There's no sitting still while grooving to these cd's. While maybe not the most varied collection of songs were chosen, all in all a good representation of raw Wailers at the time. It doesn't get much better than this. So keep on skank'n.....

Not for the fans of the high sheen of Legend. Superb for the fans of early reggae and rock-steady. Cause for celebration to real fans. The All Music Guide web site accurately says these cd's are the best collection of early Wailers out there.

The positive reviews are good but little is said about the songs themselves. On the first disc, the alternate versions of songs on "More Axe in the Complete Wailers Part 2 series" are nice, but the real treasures of the set are at the Wailers self produced work. Between the two discs, theres two "Screwface's" which have a radical difference from each other in a good way. Then "Satisfy My Soul Babe's" rhythm track is used for "Satisfy My Soul Jah Jah" which both are nice in their own, and they feature Peter Tosh's wah wah effects. Also, "Satisfy My Soul Babe (version) is probably the greatest Marley dub i've heard. Then we get into the enjoyable rarities and alternate mixes, all of which are enjoyable, so much to the point where they're all favorites of mine. There are also 5 tracks recorded in Europe at the time when Johnny Nash invited Bob up to record for a soundtrack. These tracks had a more disco-rock sound, and it was obvious that Bob wasn't in control here like he was in Kingston, along with the Wailers, making their rootsy Tuff Gong sound. The Liner notes of the set bring in great insite to what was up with the Wailers, Bob's trip to Europe, and comments on all the songs, featuring a whole page on "Concrete Jungle" giving nice info and even a map. I'd say the "Satisfy My Soul Jah Jah" disc is a better disc with more rarities than the first disc. All in all, a great last bit of recordings and mixes before the Wailers signed with Island Records.

Like the other records in this series, this stuff is largely discards and inferior stuff Marley himself NEVER spoke well of when he was alive. There ought to be a law against exploitation like this. Rita Marley and family deserve sympathy for having to face weirdness this unpleasant.

To package these fourth-rate table scraps as if they were fit to digest is just wrong. Marley and his loyal fans deserve more respect. Nuff said.

At no point in his entire life and career was Bob Marley known to have spoken well of the sub-grade junk gathered together here and treated as if it's remotely fit to listen to, let along spend money on. Marley himself would cry foul that this throat-clearing demo dross-which was meant to stay on the cutting room floor-has been retrieved from the dustbin for money-grubbing purposes. Back weh, vampires!
