4.0 out of 5 stars A remarkable work of incredible scope, November 10, 2000
I have heard Paul Stevens speak and was impressed by his incredible wealth of knowledge. I am pleased to see that he and Robert Banks have got together to share this knowledge with believers in the massive compendium of interesting articles.

More than just a series of issues the authors want to speak on, they have brought many well known Christians together to write on everything from politics to masturbation, technology to rest, and celebration to even chocolate! Some of the topics are done somewhat tongue in cheek, but they help a Christian understand that the Christian life is to be lived in everything around them, that it applies to all aspects of life.

This is a great reference book for those who are leading Bible studies, asked to comment on something or who have their own questions about certain issues. It is helpful to get a person's though processes going.

Of course, the problem with this is that, though huge, it cannot hope to be exhaustive. Moreover, in doing as much as it has, it rarely explores an issue in depth. Its intent, though, I think was met: it helps the Christian to see that Christ is truly Lord of ALL.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very thought provoking book, March 12, 2009

I have never come across a "Christian" book like this before. It is most helpful. I keep this at our dinner table and when I am sitting down for a meal, I open this huge book up and read a section. Each section takes on average about ten to twenty minutes to read.

I really appreciate the authors' Biblical perspective on the wide range of topics that they tackle. Topics which you wouldn't think could be addressed from a Biblical perspective they manage to address, like breast feeding to competition and laughter to retirement.

It is a huge book, over 1100 pages and has been very helpful to me in my Christian walk. It has helped me to see how we are pilgrims in this world and that while we should be in it, we don't need to be of it.

I think for many Christians, it is easy to segregate the things in our life as having to do with God or not having to do with God. This short sighted view is something that I still tend towards at times. This book has helped me to consider how a follower of Christ can view all the different everyday things around us and appreciate God's hand on and in each of them. I give this book my highest recommendation.

This book is profound, it does not leave anything out, it is a headlamp of the mind for those who share our faith, the Christian faith. It teaches you how to deal with day-to-day challenges and victories over the storms of life. I recommend it to all those who seek knowledge not just from the bible, but from the contemporary world. It's like the Bible in our context!.

5.0 out of 5 stars Weaving the Gospel into our daily lives, October 13, 2011

Ever since I sat in one of Rob Banks classes back in seminary, I became fascinated with how he saw the world and the questions he dared to ask that few of us in the church were seriously considering...i.e. how do we reconcile living in God's time vs. the demands of our impatient, chronologically obsessed world? How does the use of money affect our testimony in Christ or vice versa. What is it about shopping in malls or walking or leisure of whatever that needs to come under the lordship of Jesus Christ? Banks and Stevens have been pondering these things for years and their book encapsulated a wide range of topics that as a Christian and as a pastor I've come back to for yours and years. The subjects are relevant, timeless and I find myself coming back to this book as a resource for teaching, reflection and sermon preparation. It's one of the most used or worn books on my shelf and I only wish it was still in print or regularly updated. If you can find a reasonably priced copy of this, get it, open it up and you'll find yourself going from topic to topic for many well-used minutes.
