Book Description

September 1993
An exciting and diverse study of fabric painting. The direct applications of paints and dyes is emphasized, connecting the techniques of the fine arts ( painting and drawing) with the goals of textile design. Fabric painting is traced from its indigenous roots in Africa, Asia, and Central America to its popular use today by painters, fiber artists, home sewers, clothing designers, surface designers, weavers, and anyone who likes to work with paint, fabric, and color.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Over the 11 years that this book has remained in print (something of a legacy itself) it as become the reference book for fabric painters. Kanzinger tracks down everything having to do with fabric painting and pulls it into one book. -- From the Publisher

From the Back Cover

The purpose of this book is to make others aware of the possibilities inherent in the combination of the world of art and the world of needlework and clothing. I hope to attract the interest of painters who can transfer their ideas from canvas to cloth. There are now many books on various kinds of fabric decoration methods, but this is the only book of its kind that tells the complete story of fabric painting. Over 300 paint materials are tested and described here-something no other book has.

185 illustrations over 40 US artists included Updated information on techniques such as stenciling ( including floorcloths;), marbling, silk painting, transfer art processes, rubber stamping, and resist processes. Collographs, airbrush painting, spray painting, fold and dye, and direct painting are covered. New techniques include texture painting, sponge painting, foil art, sweatshirt art, and liquid beading or needlepainting. Bibliography, index, and appendices 192 pages softcover

2.0 out of 5 stars nice goal, December 8, 2003

This review is from: The Complete Book of Fabric Painting (Paperback)
The book appears self-published, poorly executed, and outdated--although well-meaning. The monospaced text was irritating to read; the photo illustration were poorly reproduced. The cover was handsome, but the interior looked as though it were a photocopy of someone's senior thesis. The text was well-written, but the facts were outdated ten years later.
