Superb introduction to jeweler's techniques for serious amateurs.,
This review is from: The Complete Book of Jewelry Making: A Full-Color Introduction to the Jeweler's Art (Paperback)
I've been doing basic stone setting and soldering fabrication for a couple of years and have been looking for a good introduction to more advanced jeweler's techniques to help inspire me to take it to the next level. There are a multitude of beautifully illustrated and produced books that attempt to do this - but fail because they don't show you enough (in an misguided attempt to keep it simple) - The Encyclopedia of Jewelry-Making Techniques comes to mind as an example of this problem. This book - Carles Codina's The Complete Book of Jewelry Making - is the real deal. It serves as a basic introduction, but gives enough detail to really get you off the ground and doing projects. I learned new wrinkles on techniques I thought I knew - and got really good insight into new techniques I've been wanting to learn, such as bead setting, engraving, bright cutting, granulation, reticulation, patination, enamel, etc.. Impressive as getting this right is - this book goes further: it gets into the cultural history and significance of jewelery art and is full of really inspiring examples of jeweler's art. Simply having pictures of great art isn't impressive - but really connecting the achieved vision of that art with the techniques described is. So, you don't just get a good idea of how to do the technique and what it looks like - but you also get a real sense of why; of how the technique pays off artistically.
This book starts off with a brief introduction of where jewelry fits in human civilization. Then it moves to introducing the bench and basic techniques and then moves on to advanced techniques. The basic techniques section mentions important details such as collecting and organizing your scraps and assaying metals. The techniques section illustrate each technique step by step and each one shows you a finished project. Finally it does a series of project illustrated step by step that make use of multiple techniques in a real applied fashion. Each part of the book is illustrated with sumptuous photographs showing the technique and tools. The text is brief, but doesn't lack detail. The artistic vision of the artist is modern - but whether you love the pieces shown or not, there is no debating that they utilize and illustrate the craft in an admirable fashion. This book fires me up and gets me working.

Not another tacky project book!,

Finally, a jewelry making book that is more than just another tacky project book. This book covers a wide range of techniques and materials. No, you will not master all of these techniques by reading this book, but you will find a wealth of information and inspiration to make your own jewelry. There are projects at the end of the book, but you do not have to make the items in order to understand the technique being demonstrated. This is an inspiring intermediate to advanced book.

Beautiful book,

I acquired this book at about the same time I started taking courses in Jewellery design. The images and the deceptively easy breakdown of processes inspired me to be ambitious with my own work. This is certainly one of those books designed to get you enthusiastic about working in the craft, even if many of the techniques are not for the beginner.

Very Disappointing,

This review is from: The Complete Book of Jewelry Making: A Full-Color Introduction to the Jeweler's Art (Paperback)
I am astonished by the glowing reviews others have left for this book. I found it incomplete and poorly organized.
The descriptions of techniques clearly omit steps; they may be of use to jewelers who are more advanced than I, but I suspect such jewelers don't need these instructions. The projects don't include lists of tools and materials. One is left to find out what is needed as one goes along. Very inconvenient. The photos are small and of poor quality, so it is sometimes difficult to discern what's being done, and how. Steps and photos are placed willy-nilly on the page, so that step 5 may appear to come right after step 1. It is *work* just to find the proper progression. There are many books that offer more information and clearer detail. (And really, how can this be the "Complete Book of Jewelry Making" at only 160 pages?) I generally get books through inter-library loan before I buy. I'm glad I did that in this case! Bottom line: Skip this one and go check out Tim McCreight's titles.

The Complete Book of Jewelry Making,
By Silversmith "John" (Clintondale, NY USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Complete Book of Jewelry Making: A Full-Color Introduction to the Jeweler's Art (Paperback)
I recently purchased this book and two others by the same author: "The Art and Craft of Making Jewellery" and "Jewellery and Silversmithing Techniques". With only very minor changes, they are essentially the exact same3 book. I think it is questionable to proffer 'triplets' as different books.
The layouts and illustrations are beautiful, however.

Most useful Jewellery book I have,

This review is from: The Complete Book of Jewelry Making: A Full-Color Introduction to the Jeweler's Art (Paperback)
This book is one of the best I have,I still refer to it whenever I am in a creative slump. As a full time jewellery Designer/Maker running a businesss I never have any time to try new techniques or read books but this one was so clear and easy to follow,so full of really interesting techniques and many many pictures that I refer to all the time.I have hundreds of jewellery books but none have been as useful and inspring as this one.I tried all the projects and they all came out as shown,I learnt more than I did in jewellery classes I've taken.
Unlike other books in mentions the use of micromotors and abrasives etc instead of pre historic tools and there are many wax projects, some really great examples of jewellery by spanish designers, and information on alloys - everything you need to know.Best $29.95 I ever spent.Made my work interesting again, will be looking out for further books by this Author.

Great perspective on Jewelry,
This review is from: The Complete Book of Jewelry Making: A Full-Color Introduction To The Jeweler's Art (Hardcover)
I enjoy this book because it supplies a visibly european slant to the methods and techniques contained within it. I enjoy that because most the books you will find on jewelry fabrication are all written in english by Americans. We need to see more books with a decidedly european influence like this one. This book gives the jeweler a larger perspective on what others are doing around the world. I bought this book and plan on getting others by Carles Codina.See my must have list of jewelry books!

A source book for art metal smiths,
By PTSideshow "GRP" (Macomb County Michigan) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Complete Book of Jewelry Making: A Full-Color Introduction To The Jeweler's Art (Hardcover)
It is as the title implies a complete book for the slightly advance or far along beginner in to the jewelry making arts. Great clear numerous pictures are on every page. Very complete descriptions accompany every picture following the technique or process being described. Being this is a U.S. reprint of a Eurobook some of the items and or tools are not translated it to American terms if you will. Example is a soldering nest which is pictured through all of Mr. Codina's books. You can see it in a lot of pictures and it turns out to be a mess of coiled steel binding wire used as a support for the item also called a jeweler's wig. This is commonly used in Europe,Mid East and the Far East. It is in the small but very helpful glossary. None of the projects shown or that are pictured are the real far out stuff found in some other books. I own it and the two other books by Mr. Codina

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Complete Book of Jewelry Making: A Full-Color Introduction to the Jeweler's Art (Paperback)
If you're interested in jewelry-making, try this book FIRST! It has much better illustrations than Tim McCreight's Metalsmithing book and is much more complete than Nicola Hurst's Step by Step project book. Not only is this book a complete and extremely well-written guide to the jeweler's art, it's packed with photos of truly original jewelry that will inspire a new way of thinking about jewelry. This is a fun book just to flip through like a coffeetable book, but it's also hands down the best jewelry-making instruction manual I've found. The best. |
