Gr. 3^-6, younger for use with an adult. This official publication of the American Kennel Club will be a favorite with dog lovers. It begins with a general section that advises readers on buying a dog, responsibilities, rewards, and how to match a dog with one's situation. It is less helpful, however, when it comes to actually choosing a breed. More than 100 dogs are profiled, with information on history, appearance, health, and "fun facts." Crisp color photographs accompany each article. Unfortunately, there is no information about a breed's weak points or liabilities, which is key to making a decision on getting a particular breed. A final section gives good advice about nutrition and health issues. Oh, yes, there are also plenty of plugs for the American Kennel Club, and the advantages of owning a purebred dog. This is a great book that I use for 4-H quiz bowl. It has complete breed descriptions for every breed in the AKC. It gives you the breed standard, a size comparison, and unique facts for EVERY breed. This book also has vital information for first aid, and health care. Great book for kids 8 and up.

As much as I like the book, it was not what I though it would be. This is a book about the various breeds explaining thme briefly to the child reader and introducing them by photos. Some of the best photos at a very reasonable price for those looking into the different breeds around!

My five year old is a huge dog fan. I wanted to find a book for her that really fit with her interests and her level. This book really fit the bill. It has fantastic photos of real dogs, shows where the dogs' origins are from, and gives average size along with a small graphic that shows the dog size in comparison to an adult. The index is easy to read so my five year old can look up a certain dog in the index and easily find it. It has a lot of information about each dog and has kept her interest for hours on end. My only complaint would be that the cover is not holding up to the usage demands! A fantastic book for any young dog lover of any age!
