5.0 out of 5 stars This is a keeper!
After keeping the local Library's copy of the first edition of this book out of circulation for long periods of time, I finally got my own copy for Christmas this year! Best gift I've ever gotten. I love the relaxed style of writing and the encouragement to go ahead and make mistakes in the interest of learning. I do lots of learning! Also, I'm very happy to have...

I think this was printed in 1994. I bought it because of the good reviews, but I should have checked the dates of the reviews, I suppose. Most of the photos are in black and white and the projects are outdated. Also, I ordered it from a third party seller and it arrived smelling of cigarette smoke. Look for a newer book on the same subject.

Also, I'm very happy to have someone tell me that a machine-quilted piece is just as "authentic" as it's hand-quilted cousin. I still haven't tried all the varieties of machine quilting described clearly and simply in this book and look forward to years of experimentation. After finally figuring out how to cut and piece accurately with Rotary Magic, I found it well-worth the investment in this book to ensure that I don't ruin my quilt top by messing up the quilting!

5.0 out of 5 stars A quilters' bible, for all levels-- a gotta have!, December 1, 1996
By A Customer
This review is from: The Complete Book of Machine Quilting (Contemporary Quilting) (Paperback)
I've used this one in it's original form for over 10 years. It provides much reference material (charts of easily-forgotten but indispensable measurements, yardage requirements, etc) plus great photos & diagrams for those of us who hate to read directions! Yet the text is well-written, easily understood, and a comforting read during those times when one is desperate for help. I have recommended this book to every quilter I know, for years, and can't express how glad I am that it's been reprinted-- a statement of worth in itself

5.0 out of 5 stars Even if you have Hargrave's get this one, May 27, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Complete Book of Machine Quilting (Contemporary Quilting) (Paperback)
This book covers the subject of machine quilting in every form. While many consider Hargrave to be the number one souce, her book Heirloom Machine Quilting is mainly about free motion quilt designed to look like hand quilting. This book on the other hand covers many, many different way of machine quilting. A must have reference for machine quilters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Every quilter needs both editions of this book, September 11, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Complete Book of Machine Quilting (Contemporary Quilting) (Paperback)
Robbie Fanning, in this book as in The Complete Book of Machine Embroidery, shows herself a master of simple explanations and of the head slapper. I wouldn't trade my copies of both editions of this book and Machine Embroidery for much of anything! Besides, she is fun to read. And, since she questions any hard and fast rule she comes across, I trust her judgment. Whether you use her directions and suggestions for the purposes for which they were designed, or use them for inspiration for ideas of your own, you will find this book useful in the extreme.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Fantastic Fannings, October 4, 2003
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Complete Book of Machine Quilting (Contemporary Quilting) (Paperback)
I agree with a prior reviewer--both editions of this book are worth owning. They are distinctly different.

I have been enthusiastic about Robbie Fanning's sewing books since the first, 1980, edition. Be sure and look up her books on machine embroidery--they're also the best and pre-date the 'lazy' method of embroidery by computer machine.

As the Fannings illustrate in these books, anyone can machine quilt. There are few fancy color photos and many showing basic techniques, along with countless line drawings. The strongest reason for purchasing either edition of this book is the obvious enthusiasm that Robbie Fanning communicates through her writing. I haven't seen this style in any other machine books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great source of information! Well written-easy to understand!, February 14, 2007
This review is from: The Complete Book of Machine Quilting (Contemporary Quilting) (Paperback)
I have read this book cover to cover. Every word and still refer back to it weekly. This is the best quilting book I have ever bought and I have at least 50. I want their new book but I can not find it. They write straight forward where you can easily understand them. Also written in a way that does not bore you or put you to sleep like some books I have. If you quilt this is a must have. Wheather you are a beginner or expert.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth adding to your quilting library!, December 31, 2006

I love the down to earth writing style of this author. I purchased this book after finding an old version of this book at a yard sale. New versions of a book can sometimes be a disappointment but that certainly is NOT the case here.

Like most quilters, I have far too many quilting books. I decided to only purchase new books that really WOW me, this book is one of those. This book is worth adding to your quilting library.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Complete Book of Machine Quilting, September 14, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Excellent condition I bought used and the book was almost new. Mom already has Cheetoes in the book from using it so much. It is an awesome book for all those quilters out there who wonder how to get the quilt to look NOT like its been done on a machine. Mom'a Birthday present so she would be better at this review because I would probably sew my thumbs together.

I bought this book as a replacement - my first copy of this book was falling apart. I especially like the instructions for quilt-as-you-go.
